Hint: the numbers.
Sometimes a “better” phone is only slightly better than the next lower specked one, earning a value for money tip for the lower model (like A34 and A54). But higher number is always specked better, thus “better” phone.
What is better to you? Better specs or better value for money?
I wouldn’t look lower than A24 for a phone for my mom.

Writing this on a 32GB TabA7 2020. It is nearly full without many apps installed. Especially no big games. 32GB was borderline when I bought it 2.5 years ago (I thought I would only use it for media consumption, but it still is a pain).

I for one can hardly see 120 vs. 60 Hz scrolling if I don’t explicitly look for it. I have it off for normal use (A53).
Tear drop notch - can be seen more than a pin hole notch. But iphone’s mega notch is the largest and people still love
People in many countries that are not in North America tend to use some form of messaging app anyway. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Threema and lots more. WhatsApp is widely used in Europe

I live in constant fear to get trapped by my 3G capable TabA7. This thing reports to Google that is is a phone… I think when I use it too much, I’ll never be able to leave the house without it anymore
Recording calls simply is forbidden in many countries, so the function is not present when using a ROM meant for those regions. It’s common for all manufacturers and not Samsung’s fault for once.
They protect against scratches. Anecdotal evidence from 8+ „Panzerglas“ I have already applied to the phone of my teenage daughter, they also seem to take the brunt out of falling on the floor. She usually has her protector crashed within days after getting a fresh one, but her Screen glas is A-OK. But she has always gone lucky with that, it‘s designed do to anti-scratch!

I use all my stuff every other day in average. Laptop is for work, PC for gaming, tablet for small stuff in the living room and for municipal council notes (iPad supplied by community). Phone for on the go.
Modern apps just are too big and require more on-device calculation power. A browser will always bog old computers or phones down, as they need lots of RAM and run Javascript.

Yes, I would probably use this on a tablet. But my current TabA7 slows to a crawl when I only just enable Edge Panels.
Ah, yes! But at least it is not a Samsung invention and has limited extensions on OneUI vs. stock Android.

Navigation gestures debuted on iPhone and Chinese phones (Xiaomi? I used it since Android 10). It’s part of Android since Android 11 or so.
I don’t use any of the special OneUI functions as I simply don’t find a use for them or the workflow they have is slower than the normal way. e.g. Edge Panels while also having gesture navigation is either in the way or out of reach (depending on which side you place the trigger bar). In all cases it’s slower than just using the home screen.
Recently I configured a Routine that would switch off fast charging at night, but since my charger is max 15W anyway it doesn’t make much of a difference if the phone doesn’t have this.
And for the visual style of OneUI, I find it too bland. Icons are awful and Samsung puts some of the ugliest low effort wallpapers on their phones. They mostly look like what you create in a Blender tutorial in one afternoon. Landscapes or pets supplied by their employees worldwide would be easy to obtain and give a personal touch to the devices from and for the Samsung staff.
I remember top phones being like this…got Androids since 1.6
Update respectively the time phones are updated us an issue with Xiaomi/Redmi. Phones are solid. Had Xiaomi before, kids and family are in Redmi Note 8 and 8pro (Updates ceased a long time ago…).
