So this is something I used to do with one of my old teams when I worked in the industry, and it was always a huge hit. Every year, we’d do a Steam Secret Santa. It worked as follows:

  • in December, participants would fill their wishlist with at least 12 games
  • participants would share their Steam IDs with each other, and each of us would draw one ID each
  • when the Winter Sale started, we would check our recipient’s wish list and buy them a game from it, to a set maximum value (we used to go for €20, but with the Steam Sale you can easily go less)
  • We would set the delivery time for 00:00 on Christmas Day

So what does everyone think? Would this be something you’d be interested in as a community? If there’s enough genuine interest I’d be happy to try and coordinate something using an online service like Elfster.

I love this, but, I unfortunately have a very different idea about it…

The stuff on my own wishlist, especially if it’s on sale, I can just buy for myself. What I would actually rather is, buy me your favorite game. Buy me something that’s not on my radar. Introduce me to something new.

Similarly, I would love to buy you my favorite game, something I think is great but you’ve never considered. Ideally, show me what you’ve got, so I can get an idea of your favorite genre, and then let me pick something in that genre which I really enjoy.

I dunno, is that just me?
