They improved the cooling system but why there is still one fan setup.Dual fan setup -> much more less noise and more cooling.I didn’t test it OLED model yet but currently old steam deck is not usable at 15W because of noise.

People are using at 10W mode, little performance loss and noise down to acceptable level.I hope we don’t have to do this in new OLED model.

I use Honeywell PTM7950 and the new ysaux vented backplate and I don’t have noise at 15w it still keeps cool and quiet.

I watched bunch of reviews of the oled version (probably tad too many, but hey, hype). some reviewers tested temps and noise. they all said: it’s running cooler (oled less demanding than lcd; bigger/better fan) and quieter under load. noticeably.

they also said (few of them actually) they have never before seen a revision like this, in a positive way. compared to what nintendo did with switch (screen only really) and ps with ps5 slim now, valve is praised for the amount of work they put into this. the list of upgrades is really something if you go through it.

my bet is valve improved fan, tested with new screen and all and said ‘yes, this is good now, improved a lot’

yeah but the same people stating its cooler and quieter that also show a side by side comparison for games with their own benchmarks show this “cooler” system has its fan running at the same speed as the lcd, so it must be shifting the same amount of heat or the oled’s fan wouldnt be running at the same speed. It also cant be due to running faster/better as its performance is pretty much the same and the same videos showing the benchmarks show the cpu/gpu doing pretty much the same as lcd as well.

So not sure why theres claims of it being cooler, yeah some components might be cooler/more efficient, but the end result is what heat is the fan shifting and from the videos the oled is pushing the same heat and fan speeds as the lcd.

either way, ill take a quieter fan.

The APU is on a 6nm node instead of 7nm. It’s more efficient at the same performance level: less power, less heat. They’ve also pretty dramatically changed the layout of the internals in the OLED model, and it has better airflow now, as a result. That’s why.

yeah i understand all of that, but i also see the side by side game benchmarks showing the same cpu/gpu speeds and fan speed, if the fans of both oled and lcd are running the same then doesnt that mean both are hot enough to ramp the fans to the same speeds? if the oled is running cooler at the same performance then surely the fan should be going a bit slower due to…being cooler?

Space inside the Deck is at a premium. You want more fans, you’ll have to sacrifice something. What’ll it be? Battery life?
