Hey, what do you think when will the next Apple TV be introduced and at what price? I just bought the current Apple TV with 128GB for 160 Euros (Germany) and am now unsure whether I should unpack it or wait? The rumor mill is hot, an Apple TV with more graphics power would be great for gaming, but I would actually like to use my Apple TV now and not always have to hang my iPad Pro on my TV for movies or gaming. Unpack and have fun with it or will a new generation be introduced in the near future at a similar price, so that I would regret it?
I’m just gonna be blunt. Last week I was in the same boat that you’re in and I decided to just bite the bullet get the 2022 128GB model and I absolutely made the right decision. All we know about the next Apple TV are rumors that it might have the A16 or A17 processor and it might come out in 2024. Why suffer needlessly by waiting on a rumor when the current model is sitting right there? Outside of maybe 8K video I can’t imagine what more one could ask of an Apple TV.
I can’t see anything being worth waiting for unless you game and AAA games were possible. From a streaming standpoint, there is nothing the current ATV cannot do.
You are safe to unpack it and use it.
Don’t wait on a more powerful AppleTV. There’s no point. They’re already overpowered and seldom updated. There aren’t games pushing the limit.
The rumor mill is full of $hit. Whatever you’ve heard, it has come from people who have zero clue about the Apple TV. Apple can sometimes go 3 or 4 years before updating their Apple TV device. The current generation is barely 1 year old.
Also, Apple does not use hardware specific to the Apple TV. This current generation is using the A15 Bionic “system on a chip”. That’s the same SOC used for the iPhone 13 lineup. The only option is to start selling Apple TVs with the newer A16 or A17, which would push the price sky high. And for what? The A15 is an incredibly powerful SOC as it is, and there are zero games that even come close to pushing the hardware. Apple is slowly starting to build up the business relationships within the game development community for MacOS, so eventually that will trickle down to the Apple TV, but that will take years.
So, to sum it up; you have a very powerful SOC already. The only viable hardware upgrades are the A16 and A17 SOCs, and those would push the price past the PS5. The game development ecosystem for these devices is basically in its infancy, so the likelihood of a game developer taking advantage of what the A15 offers is non-existent.
So, peel off the plastic wrap, plug in that Apple TV and enjoy it for what it is; a really great streaming device. And, for those rumor sources; delete them, the people speculating are clearly full of shit.

Thats absolutely BS. While I also do not expect an updated model very soon, the price would absolutely not be as high. The A15 was (iirc) estimated to cost between 50 and 70USD to manufacture. Athe A16 was at ~110 while the A17 was at ~150 for the highest estimates. While this could result in a worst case 100USD price increase, that is still far away from PS5 prices.
Why would Apple give away their top chip in a $150 streaming device. That would be insanely stupid. Keep the latest gen chips in the highest margin devices. Your idea makes zero business sense.
I wouldn’t mind the hardware AV1 decoding from the M3 on the apple tv
They should’ve included that on the current gen. If Amazon & Roku can implement that into their devices which cost less then what’s Apples excuse? This is suppose to be a premium streamer.
