They were set up when they were needed, by mostly by children, and then put away (mostly by parents). Durable plastic with a top-loading disc drive and big friendly buttons made sense.
The genius of the PS2’s design was Sony saying “no, gaming is here to stay, I live in the entertainment center full time now.” Nintendo didn’t get the memo that generation.
