I think (from the front) it looks better, works better (smaller). The half panel matte, half panel gloss for the sides is definitely a shortcoming I find worse but eh, you get a removable CD slot

Aesthetics mean exactly nothing when we’re talking about a game console tbh. It sits in its spot for 10 years to play the odd game and watch YouTube or Netflix on. Idk why people like to act like they’re so special for thinking it looks one way or another, it’s a glorified PC and takes up 1/3 of the space, couldn’t care less what it looks like

I like Dave2D’s comparison of this refresh to the Steam Deck wherein both Sony and Valve are in unique positions where their dominance in their own market space should mean they can afford to reduce costs for their hardware since losses are subsidized by their marketplace anyway.

Valve’s the only one doing it, while upgrading the Deck OLED with a better screen, better APU, better fan, and more battery life. Sony on the other hand is just resting on its laurels.

Well technically Valve kept the exact same price tiers, but the upgrade is much more substantial.

When Nintendo did something similar a few years back they charged $50 extra. And speaking of dominance in their relative space…

500€ to play latest tech games is very affordable compared to what it costs on PC. Alan Wake 2 was a great example of that when people with 7 year old rigs lost their minds.

don’t forget that they’ll be ewaste in 10 years when the activation servers for the disc drives goes offline. Then you’ll have spent $400 on a console that cant phone home to download games from its store, and cant phone home to register its disc drive which knocks out physical games.

Yeah I had been holding out hope for a toned down slim redesign as well.

I’ve got my gaming setup in my little man cave where it’s all pretty front and center. I can’t bring myself to stick this ugly fucking thing under my tv when it’s literally gonna be like 3’ from my face. Not keen at the thought of having to drop like $50 on custom side panels either, just so the thing can look halfway decent.

Not everyone cares about console design, but I can’t stand shitty looking tech. Especially when it’s going to constantly be in my face. Unless they release something drastic in another couple of years, I’ll probably skip PlayStation this gen altogether 🤷🏻‍♂️

Shit I hope fanboyism still is a thing though, that’s part of what used to be so great and fun about console gaming to me, the vibe is real seeing two sides fight to be the best. Same with the looks, seeing 2 companies trying to make a cool looking console. If anything the look of the original Xbox destroys anything PS has put out before the PS5 in my opinion. Games are art and the PS5 fucking reflects that

Sure. And you can get fans to ventilate the cabinet, or you can have the cabinet door open. Or you can buy Darkplates from D Brand.

Or you can decide it’s not worth trying to work around how ugly the PS5 is and either buy a different console or buy a nice computer case and build an htpc instead (which is the route I went, incidentally).

All of these are valid options if you hate the look of the PS5. I didn’t say it wasn’t a solveable problem, just that it’s valid to consider the aesthetics of the thing.

I wouldn’t say it was gorgeous, but it had a good look. IMO, the 2 and 4 were their best takes.

I appreciate the bold take of the PS5, but what I hate it the sheer inability to walk away from a design where it’s clear that an aspect of it wasn’t able to be incorporated into it (cough disc drive cough) so they just gave it a tumor on its side.

The modular drive should have always been part of the design too. There’s no way that wasn’t though of before the slim take and it makes so much sense from a production standpoint.

PS1 was also a great design, just very of its time. Consoles used to sit on the floor, plugged into the front inputs on TVs. They were set up when they were needed, by mostly by children, and then put away (mostly by parents). Durable plastic with a top-loading disc drive and big friendly buttons made sense.

The genius of the PS2’s design was Sony saying “no, gaming is here to stay, I live in the entertainment center full time now.” Nintendo didn’t get the memo that generation.

So much kvetching in this thread and it won’t matter, people will still buy the PS5 regardless of what whiners on Reddit say. If the design aesthetics of consoles mattered, the Series X and S would have outsold the PS5 2 to 1 instead of the reverse.

I think of it more as a concrete block! It is however, an unobtrusive concrete block that takes up as little visual and physical space as possible. As someone who’s had trouble finding a physical space for my PS5, I would be quite happy with something a bit more sober. The PS5’s size was dictated by an overestimation of how much cooling would be required on the final production silicon and how to cool it cheaply, but the design is purely a marketing decision. I suppose it ultimately doesn’t matter, since the PS5 is outselling Xbox by a ridiculous margin, and third party software sales on Xbox are less than its market share would suggest. I do appreciate the design and engineering in the Series X, though the things that allow the compact form factor like the split motherboard and vapor chamber cooler mean that it costs around 30% more to make than the PS5, which necessitated the compromised Series S.
