By switching to torx screws they force people that don’t have proper electronics repair tools to buy them instead of using whatever shitty, ill fitting phillips-head screwdriver they have laying around. This should cut down on the number of stripped screws massively.

It won’t do anything for the people that don’t know how to use a screwdriver properly, but it should help a lot. (There was never a problem with Valve using “soft screws”, they were able to drive the screws into the plastic bosses while cutting threads in the first place - backing them out is not going to generate higher forces.)

The new metal bosses will allow a ton more mating cycles before wearing out too. All around a much better design.

Yeah. Self tapping screws into plastic bosses are fine for a consumer electronics device where you don’t expect people to open it up but if it’s a device where you can reasonably expect people to open it up to service it (like say, a computer) you really should use machine screws into metal bosses.
