Looking at getting at either:

  • MacBook Pro 14" (2021) with a M1 pro 8-core CPU / 14 core GPU, 16GB ram for $1439.
  • MacBook Pro 14" (2021) with a M1 pro 10-core CPU / 16 core GPU, 16GB ram for $1549.
  • MacBook Air 15" (2023) with a M2 with 8 GB ram for $1100.

For context: I am a student, but I want this computer to last a while since I am in my last year of school. Anything past $1125 is a bit of a stretch, although doable if it is really worth the difference. I also will be doing some light gaming on it, but will not be needing to use it for any video editing or rendering etc.

Thank you for any and all help!

Literally was just deciding the same thing last week. Went with the 14" MBP.

Not everyone notices it, but the screen on the MBP just feels like it kills the MBA (again, to me, someone who really likes displays) and support for two monitors when docking made me go for it. Plus, if I want some power down the line, I already got it, and if I’m somewhere hot (live in the heat) I at least have the fans as backup. I just think the difference in price is minimal compared to how long I’ll have the laptop so shot for it.

With that said though, the M3 will be announced next week most likely so you may be able to get the M2 for similar prices or the MBA might drop even more so I’d reassess then if you can wait. Or don’t, and you’ll have 14 days to return (what I’m waiting for from the announcement).
