Hi! So as the title states I’m a bit confused and looking for some insight. I’m buying my bf a steam deck for Christmas but it says I have to connect it to an account? Is there a way to connect it to his without him knowing I bought it? Thank you in advance!!

You can buy it from your account then he can log in when he gets it, don’t buy it on his account or else he’ll automatically get the shipping information emailed to him. Another important thing to note when buying it as a gift is that although the box it ships in doesn’t say steam deck on it, it has its own standard box so if he’s been considering buying one himself and looking at reviews or unboxings be careful as he might recognize the box if he sees it

I think it’s pointless to buy one brand new or refurbished for that matter when they are so much more cheaper on Facebook Marketplace… if you want OLED that’s another story.

OP, this is not related to your question, but here’s a tip: when you get the Deck, charge it, log into everything, and download your bf’s favorite games on there in secret. That way, he can open it and immediately start gaming!

The only issue I see with creating your own account is that the steam profile bonus you get is only for the account you purchased it on, besides that, if you think he wouldn’t care, then do that. I personally didn’t care and bought mine from marketplace and i couldn’t be happier

Great tips here! Just want to add that the box it comes in isn’t exactly stealthy, so if you end up ordering one, make sure to nab it and hide it away asap.

This might’ve changed since I got mine, but I was pretty shocked at how obvious it was when I picked it up off my porch. I think FedEx had a string of internal thefts due to this as well.

If you planning on buying the new steam deck, steam did announce some restrictions for new accounts attempting to buy it. So if you do make a new account I’m not sure what obstacles you’ll run into but because on their announcement you may not be able to buy it yourself. Another suggestion I haven’t seen is you could buy a steam deck gift card and have him buy it himself.

My gf bought me a steam deck earlier this year. She used her account to buy it. The points you get (for buying cosmetic steam stuff) go to her account. It is a lot of points so if you think he cares about that kind of stuff more than it being a surprise then you could purchase with his account. Those points just sit idle on her account now and there is no way to transfer them.
