Sorry this may have been covered in different comments but I can’t find a single source and am terrible at reading GitHubs layout.

I’m buying a new Rm2 and wanted to know if the new firmware is easy enough to hack/mod? I see mention of separate hardware being needed if I brick it and was wondering what the story is.

Also what are the most common features that people hack for?

I hope to use it to read for leisure and take notes in meetings that I can get to other devices (windows & Mac). Do I need to hack for any extra functionality? I don’t have any issue using epub/pdf

it’s very easy to downgrade and even dual boot different versions. The only main thing preventing third party stuff from working on newer versions is rm2fb support, which is

what allows the apps to interact with the display, which is part of xochitl(note taking software by rM) and changes every update

most hacks I know are third party apps, and the one hack that adds a whole load of functionality to the main app is DDVK-hacks, which isn’t available yet. I use KOReader to read manga, and yaft with the Type Folio to run VIM. It all depends on what’s there(or what you can make yourself ;)) and your needs

Most of the “hacking” I’ve done with my own tablets (I own two) has been for two main purposes:

    • to NOT be forced to use reMarkable’s cloud service, which I don’t trust because (1) it’s hosted on google’s cloud, and (2) the files stored in the cloud are not encrypted.

    • to satisfy my own curiosity about how it works.

Part of what I do for a living involves writing software, so I’ve also written some scripts to make it easier for me (and others) to interact with the tablet. I’ve also written some scripts to generate custom templates, and PDFs with calendars which can be used like “day planners”.

The remarkable.jms1.info site contains what I’ve figured out and/or written about the reMarkable tablets. Check it out when you have some time. (Also be aware that the “Future” section is not my entire to-do list for the site, there are at least a dozen other things I want to cover when I get some time to write about them.)

I mean how I can hack the rm2, where the topics are taking about the same to understand what’s going on?

If you Google remarkable hack you get the GitHub with instructions. You’ll need to downgrade to a compatible version. What I’m not sure about is why to hack. I need to do it to make extra features work on the Lamy stylus I bought instead of the remarkable official one. It offered more cloud options without a subscription. I also believe and hope, that DRM and cloud stuff will be better.
