  • So the Google drive part is completely free. BUT, it might not work as you’d like. What it lets you do is download PDFs(or docx/pptx converted to PDFs by OneDrive) and upload PDF exports of notebooks/PDFs. The problem is, it’s not a sync service. So, if you download file A.pdf, write something to it, and then upload back to GDrive, you’ll have a duplicate of A.pdf that’s the newer version.

You can totally SSH into the device and transfer files with curl(which basically utilises the web interface) iirc, or just directly copy their proprietary files format notebooks too, altho they will be unreadable without a working third-party tool for that version. What I’d use the SSH for is full notebook backups rather than a normal way of transferring. Then again, I do have toltec(the community package manager) on an older version of the OS to run a terminal emulator with VIM and directly upload files to GitHub(so mostly just C code) ;)

  • In the case of the rocketbook, from my perspective, it’s a bit cumbersome (haven’t used it tho =P)

I’d say give the rM a try. They have a generous 100-day satisfaction guarantee, so if you can spend on it, try it to see whether you like it or not. Your usecase definitely seems like something that’ll fit the reMarkable, and having a bunch of templates and the ability to load in any PDF file and annotate it directly is very powerful

  • The way handwriting is “linked” to the text needs a little getting used to, since manipulating the text also changes the handwritten content. Think of the text feature like a typewriter with thick margins and not a word processor or something where you can have text boxes and move it anywhere

My favourite way to use it is for the lower writing angle that also lets you quickly add a heading or two to the notebook, as they can be searched even within a page, making it easier to jump from/to different sections of a notebook. There’s also report writing for my projects where I make a full rough draft on the rM and annotate with the pen any specifics/additions I might want for the final one

  • They combined the strokes and pen selection into a new “pencil case” that has both in a single box.

Templates can be loaded as PDFs(but they won’t be like any template on device, but more like a notebook with the template baked into it. so you’ll need to duplicate this PDF everytime you want to use just the template). For a template that shows up like every other one on device, the steps are much more annoying, so it’s best to look for them( remarkable.guide might have it)

  • it’s very easy to downgrade and even dual boot different versions. The only main thing preventing third party stuff from working on newer versions is rm2fb support, which is

what allows the apps to interact with the display, which is part of xochitl(note taking software by rM) and changes every update

most hacks I know are third party apps, and the one hack that adds a whole load of functionality to the main app is DDVK-hacks, which isn’t available yet. I use KOReader to read manga, and yaft with the Type Folio to run VIM. It all depends on what’s there(or what you can make yourself ;)) and your needs
