Steam Deck. If you have the money, the OLED or LE versions. Ally has better specs but battery life takes a beating because of those specs. But the main reason I’d never pick the current Ally or even the Legion Go over a Steam Deck is because of the support and the user experience (UX). Valve provides better support for Steam Deck and Steam OS than Asus/Lenovo/Microsoft provides for portable gaming PCs that run Windows.

Also, I’ve seen a lot of people suggest running Big Picture Mode to get a Steam OS experience on the Ally or the Go. It looks similar but it doesn’t function quite the same and features are missing. Initially I pre ordered a Ally months ago, but ultimately decided to pass on it cancelling the order. I already had a OG Steam Deck. Bought the OLED instead of the Ally.

Then there’s the battery life or lack thereof if you want to game above 15 watt. Sure, you’re going to get better performance than the Deck but your battery life is going to take a nose dive off a cliff when playing heavy games.

But hey, if you want MOAR POWAR!, go with the Ally and take your chances. You might like it regardless.

Your first mistake is using the phrase “proper gamer.” What the hell is that anyway? Someone that lives in their parent’s basement, games 20 hours a day and never washes?

A gamer is simply a person that likes to play. You don’t have to know everything about modding and consoles to be a gamer no different than you don’t have to be a automotive engineer to enjoy driving. Would a Steam Deck be wasted on you? Yes, if you are simply unwilling to learn.

If you’re willing to learn how to apply mods and are willing to learn about how Steam Deck works (keep in mind, it’s a portable computer, it’s not a Switch, it’s not a console) then Steam Deck might be good for you and you can get a lot of great gaming out of it.

Warframe runs at 90FPS. Surprised the hell out of me until I realized the screen is set to 90hz by default so if a game supports frame rate higher than 60 then it’s going to shoot for 90 unless the user changes it. Good stuff.

Also started playing Lost Planet again and that runs at 90FPS. Looks great but not so surprising considering how old the game is.

The exception so far, Monster Hunter: World is a no go. Steam Deck OLED simply cannot run that game at 90fps reliably. It struggles at 60FPS with anything other than low settings with various features turned off. Even then it’s suspect. 40-45 FPS with a mix of high to med settings with HDR and it’s gravy. 30FPS at max settings looks great on the OLED but doesn’t feel as good to play due to lower frame rate.

Why speculate at this point when Valve themselves has said that the technology needed for a truly next gen portable experience hasn’t been created yet, which is the very reason why Steam Deck 2 is years away.

It’s been proven time and again that the best specs doesn’t mean much if the games aren’t there or if the experience of playing what games ARE there is poor. Who cares what spec of the new iPhone has or the new Macbooks or any competing device if the games aren’t there? Xbox Series X is far and away more powerful than a Switch and yet Microsoft is getting curb stomped at retail by Switch. Why? Because Switch has great games that a lot of people want to play, great exclusives. Xbox Series, not so much. See, it’s not about being “more powerful” and that’s where Lenovo, Asus and Ayaneo f***ed up. It’s about providing the best experience for the price. It’s about providing content that the userbase actually wants.

I have to agree with Trick about expectations. Far too many people have some pretty ridiculous expectations. Speculating about a hypothetical Steam Deck 2 compared to a PS5 is just absurd. Comparing a dedicated console that’s plugged into an outlet, to a portable gaming PC that’s running on battery power. Make it make sense.
