The Apple Store in my city really went wild on me. I needed my battery replaced and they were gonna charge me the standard rate for that as I didn’t have Apple Care. My screen had burn-in as you could see the text keyboard all the time even when it wasn’t being used, and they suggested they could replace my screen at my cost to fix that issue. I said I don’t have a ton of money and the burn-in doesn’t bother me one bit. Please just replace my battery and gimme back my phone. They tried to pressure me into an at-my-cost screen repair but I refused! If my screen works, it’s just ugly with burn-in, I don’t care!!!
When they called me in to get my “repaired” phone, they said that while trying to get to the battery, they broke my screen so they will replace the screen at my own cost along with the battery replacement fee. I told them that wasn’t fair! Why am I being charged for their mistake?! They said there’s always a chance something like this could happen and it’s part of the risks of getting your phone repaired and I should know better and expect this could happen. They then offered me back my phone with the battery replacement fee waved but the still busted screen. In short, “Fine! Don’t want to pay to fix your screen? Then here’s your busted screen-phone! Consider the new battery as a consolation prize!” The battery didn’t matter at that point as the screen was unusable!
I had to call Apple directly to sort this out and I got told the “Genius” at the store who was responsible for breaking my screen thought I was being a brat (not his exact words but definitely his exact meaning) and didn’t deserve a fixed screen if I wasn’t going to pay for it. Apple argued with the store, got my screen replaced as well as the battery replacement I already had, and made sure I didn’t have to pay a thing. They even gifted me a free Apple Watch band of my choice for my troubles! The Genius, I’m told, had a tantrum that I got my free screen. I stopped going to that location so no idea what happened after that.
Anyone who doesn’t believe me, I’ve got emails from the Apple CSR where we discuss this, for proof. :P It was nuts!
Toronto Eaton Centre Apple Store, if anyone wants to know. Happened pre-pandemic. Was my iPhone X.
