I had this happen a long time ago. I had to factory reset the phone and restore from backup for it to stop. Mine did it randomly though. Not for every unlock.

The watch definitely does this. If your sleeve covers the display it will switch off. The rest of the time it’s always on.

Probably the glass was ok, just not installed correctly. It was making contact with the frame, or there was some foreign material in between the frame and glass. Even cheap glass shouldn’t break as long as the pressure is applied evenly over the full surface.
