I don’t think Deck, or any pc handheld, will age as gracefully.
I dunno man. In the advent of systems like the Analog Pocket, even the gameboy and GBA look awful now. It’s bonkers how much better GB and GBA games look and play on the Pocket, even off the original carts.
SD made successful because of the cost /performance, nothing else.
Not crazy at all. I had an Atari Lynx in 1990, then an Ipaq 550 in 02, that was practically a modern cellphone with films, news, GPS. I’ve seen it all become obsolete, generally having an idea of what came next long before anyone else.
As recent as last year I still took my GBA SP on holidays with me to keep me entertained on planes lol. Now I have the Deck though I just use that instead.
I don’t think they will to be honest.
The ~fifth generation Deck will be able to play all the games the current generation one does right out of the box without rebuying them, unlike the Switch which doesn’t take Gameboy carts.
The Steam Deck 5 would be a legacy king.
Basically would be able to play every game generation up until like the PS6. Probably running VR too.
All at like 15W.
Yeah, my windows 95 games run effortlessly on a windows 10 computer (they don‘t)
I just wish that by the “fifth generation” of the Deck rolls out there will be a Deck Lite / Portable / Smol line, with let say second to first generation’s feature set but half the size and weight.

Exciting to wonder what handheld tech we’ll have 15 years!
But also how cool will it be that people will be able to pick up ‘game boys’ that can play (almost) every single game from 2022 and prior.
Sadly modern technology doesn’t age as nicely as Gameboys and other retro stuff will. Some will, but the majority likely won’t.
When i had my ds lite with a flashcart back around 09/10, i remember browsing the gbatemp forums and regular threads asking if the DS would ever get an N64 emulator.
There was one piece of hardware shown off called the (Pandora,)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora_(computer)] that was afaik one of the earlier gaming handheld PCs and definitely made me interested in the potential of handheld computing as phones and similar were improving at a rapid pace.
Steam deck to me feels like a fully realized and optimized version of what kid-me would have wanted. Maybe even better than i could have expected with many AAA titles now playable or verified for steam deck and local game streaming to utilize with a good gaming PC.
I think the Steam Deck, with its massive bezels, poor battery life, loud fans, and low resolution screen, will age particularly horribly, yeah. My kids are gonna find mine in a box one day and wonder wtf it even is or how anybody tolerated gaming on it. It’s just how things go. I remember holding a game gear for the first time in the 90s and being absolutely blown away by the screen and visuals. Looking at one now, it looks ridiculous.
It’s just how tech goes.

Compare it to a Game Gear instead and it makes more sense.
Well the Switch is literally the latest incarnation of the Game Boy line, even if they did drop the name when they made the DS.
Steam Deck 15 will probably be a neural implant or something. Gabe Newell is interested in the technology.
Weird comparison imo considering Steam Deck has the Linux OS. It will always have some kind of usefulness or function. A game boy is basically just a brick unless you have a cartridge to put in it.

As long as Valve continues to operate for that long and their servers don’t go offline, I would like to imagine the Steam Deck and its variants will continue to work into the future and as a semi-retro collector, I love to continue adding more hardware like the Steam Deck to my other retro systems I own :)
