-If it’s for ROMs only, then id use a MicroSD card as it’s cheaper and meets the needs
-If it’s for games within the past 8 years, I’d go for the SSD upgrade.
One thing I’d note, if it’s the SSD upgrade, I’d save and splurge for the 2TB NVME instead.
Yeah, tbf, I’m not interested in the new case and would buy a replacement. So there’ll probably be plenty of these things floating around.
The Steam Deck 5 would be a legacy king.
Basically would be able to play every game generation up until like the PS6. Probably running VR too.

I’m with you, the big thing for me is USB4 support for eGPUs.
Once that comes, the iterative upgrades for a Steam Deck are far less frequently required. At the moment the Deck really struggles with performance on AAA titles from the past few years. An eGPU provides the ability to blow this out of the water, but also upgradability.
So you could buy a Steam Deck, that could easily last you 6/7 years like a console generation, and you just upgrade the eGPU as needed.
I usually delete the entire drive and reformat.

I’m just hoping this means that the next Steam Deck 2 will also be OLED. I’m hoping it’s not a Nintendo situation, where they release a Switch OLED, but the next Switch is rumoured to be an LCD panel.

I would personally suggest the 512GB OLED Deck over the 1TB one.
Then subtract the cost of selling your current device.
But yeah, Steam Deck 2.0 is probably 2-3 years off. Hopefully with all of these improvements and more.

Imagine paying £700 for a Rog Ally, only for Steam Deck OLED to come out at £469 with the same sized NVME, but with an OLED screen, superior battery life and basically the same performance. Not to mention SteamOS is amazing, while Windows Handheld is just awful.
The Steam Deck OLED just slapped the Ally so casually, that its actually embarassing.
Steam will allow the return of Steam Hardware from within the past 14 days.
So return the deck.
The 2TB SSD will work fine in the Steam Deck OLED, so keep that.
I don’t see that happening with the Deck 2. Just too demanding. Even things like an RTX 4090 struggle and that thing is like 10 times the power draw of the whole Steam Deck.
Would more likely be a 4TB drive instead. Tends to double in general.
Would make a huge difference. Plus MicroSD just increased to 1.5TB max with Sandisk, and 2TB ones down the line.
I could see in 2025 with the Steam Deck 2.0 people upgrading theirs to have a 4TB & 2TB combo. Then in the Dock, throw a nice 8TB drive in & an eGPU. That’s the dream.
To be fair, doesn’t the Deck OLED both run cooler and have a massive improvement to the battery.
-Cooler device, that’s also lighter & quieter.
-But like 30-40% battery life is pretty huge.
For a single mid-gen improvement, I’m happy with that jump.
At this point, I would prefer more performance (with the same power usage) than battery if it were an exclusive upgrade.
That’s not Steam’s refund policy, that is consumer rights protection laws.
