    Valve: “The technology doesn’t exist”

Aunt May: “You’re not George Lucas, you know.”

I guess another 2-3 years isn’t that far away.

With the way Valve is transparent nowadays, expect the Steam deck to come out by next christmas

I think with the release of Zen 4c we will start to see the future path for Steam Deck 2, especially with its efficiency at low TDPs. What we need now is efficient GPU cores that can get a 1.5-2x performance boost to make a Steam Deck 2 worth it.

Would more likely be a 4TB drive instead. Tends to double in general.

Would make a huge difference. Plus MicroSD just increased to 1.5TB max with Sandisk, and 2TB ones down the line.

I could see in 2025 with the Steam Deck 2.0 people upgrading theirs to have a 4TB & 2TB combo. Then in the Dock, throw a nice 8TB drive in & an eGPU. That’s the dream.

Something to allow for path tracing and AI upscaling support? Maybe TV casting from the deck with imperceptible input lag?

I don’t see that happening with the Deck 2. Just too demanding. Even things like an RTX 4090 struggle and that thing is like 10 times the power draw of the whole Steam Deck.

Exactly. The next Deck will need to accommodate ray/path tracing as the norm for PC gaming, and none of the currently available chipsets are good enough for that.

    Power isn’t the issue.

Thermals and battery are the next big breakthroughs we need in technology.

To be fair, doesn’t the Deck OLED both run cooler and have a massive improvement to the battery.

-Cooler device, that’s also lighter & quieter.

-But like 30-40% battery life is pretty huge.

For a single mid-gen improvement, I’m happy with that jump.

At this point, I would prefer more performance (with the same power usage) than battery if it were an exclusive upgrade.

I know this does not have a good chance to happen, but what if Valve moved to ARM platform for Steam Deck 2? Steam Deck made people play games made for Windows on a Linux system more than ever. And Qualcomm-since Apple won’t sell M chips to other companies-is finally experiencing huge breakthroughs in terms of performance and power efficiency for ARM chips so if Valve manages to come up with something like Proton again, but now it let’s Linux on ARM play most games made for Windows on X86. ARM chips consume far less power compared to x86 so this will benefit handheld gaming devices tremendously in terms of battery life or thermals.

    Just daydreaming.

They mean as in small form factor power and batteries they could make one now but it be 3 times the size you want a 4070 handheld well you need battery tech to improve to even think about powering jt

Once we see FSR with AI Upscaling support that addresses temporal instability issues as well as full support for frame generation, i doubt we’ll see another deck.

With current gen Games challenging even the most potent computers, we’ve got a long way to go for Handheld to reach that level. Even never chips of the ROG Ally and others, probably, wouldn’t provide a noteworthy enough increase in performance for certain current gen titles.

I’m certain Valve will be capable to provide a very good Deck 2, now we’ll have to wait and see how the chips develop to keep up with the raising demand in power.

Seeing as the newest iPhone is $1,200 and only slightly better than the Steam Deck, I completely agree. It’s probably going to be a while before more a more powerful processor is cost effective.
