Not wanting to lose my modded New Vegas/Skyrim, emulators, non-Steam games, etc. I decided to swap internal SSDs, I know there was some questions about the possibility of it so I’m here to confirm you can do it.

LCD Deck was updated to SteamOS 3.5 Stable, OLED Deck not updated at all. Upon swapping SSDs the OLED Deck greeted me with a “you are one of the first OLED Deck owners and we need to update the console” message (must’ve known from the motherboard). Upon updating everything the OLED worked as it should. The LCD Deck black screened for awhile then started up without any audio, also needing an update. Once that was done it worked as normal and greeted me with the first time setup menu.

Nice! Just did mine and can confirm the same. Had to fix dual boot again though, but everything seems in order now.

I plan to in the future do a shell swap, while I’m in there I do want to make a few minor alterations. If it’s possible the slap an oled in there with little issues, I’m tempted.

    I just did the same

Hopefully I never have to open it up again! My other two LCD decks ended up with creaking and clicking in the shell from opening it so many times for thermal pad replacement etc

The OLED Deck shouldn’t creak since it uses threaded metal inserts whereas the LCD uses self tapping screws meaning it loses integrity everytime it’s taken apart.

that’s not how self tapping screws work, that only happens if they’re drilled in, not screwed by hand

    OP,

How hard was changing the SSD? Did you remove the heat shield or just unscrew it and lift it up a bit? I saw there were cables attached to it now and to be careful with that.

Does anybody know if I can clone my old 1tb deck to the new OLED SSD without swapping them? Like creating an image of the old SSD and transferring it to the new one?

Echo’ing another comment in here, just did the same thing. Worked like a charm without any hassle, hardest thing was taking off the back plate and taking out the battery connector. Everything else was smooth sailing. I used a T6 Torx Screwdriver and a P1 Phillips Screwdriver

I have an issue with mine after I swapped. I think I’m missing display options, like HDR is missing.

HDR is built into the panel so it should be working fine, you’ll see HDR on the Quick Settings access if you’re playing a game that’s HDR enabled.

Did you get the exclusive startup video and keyboard? I also swapped my SSD, and its missing.

Also just swapped SSDs, as I had upgraded my LCD deck with a 1 TB drive from Microcenter. The only thing is that the ribbon cable on the OLED deck goes over the metal heatshield, so it was a little tricky carefully lining the SSD up into the slot with the heatshield still semi-attached.

I love this OLED Deck though. The screen is freaking gorgeous!

Can the joystick from steam deck oled be used in LCD steam deck?

If not, will the spares for LCD steam deck be available in future provided we have OLED now?

I’m sure they could swap since all joysticks are just covers that go onto a nub, but the OLED joysticks feel 10x better so you probably wouldn’t want to.
