Okay friends, let’s check who has a Samsung OLED panel, and who has the BOE OLED panel inside his Deck.
Steps to check:

Go to Desktop mode

Open Konsole
-
Paste the following command into the terminal:
cat /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/edid | hexdump -C
You will get the output like in this screenshot:
The marked number is relevant and means the following:
01: 800x1280 @59.998545 (BOE, LCD)
02: No longer present
03: 800x1280 @90.003892 (Samsung, OLED)
04: 800x1280 @90.061454 (BOE, OLED)
So my results are:
Model: Steam Deck 512GB OLED
Panel: Samsung OLED
What’s yours? Please also don’t forget to post the model, so we can analyze if there’s some correlation.

Crazy. So I guess the best option right to avoid all the controversy is the 512gb

The fans were objectively a big difference though. This is hopefully negligible.
I think not too much with later revisions. I got Delta, replaced it with Huaying. Didn’t noticed difference in noise levels. But in turn Huaying made my Deck vibrate at high speeds, thus I’ve put back the Delta fan.
It’s still annoying. The reason we buy a specific product is so we can all get the same experience. There never should be a difference in one to the next unless there is a sku change or public announcement.
I love my Steam Deck, and I like Valve, this is not the move. I understand they probably did this to send more units out faster but its frustrating.
Imagine spending 600 bucks knowing someone else spent the same 600 but got the better one. even if its a small difference its still a difference.
I totally agree. I really dislike the hardware component differences.
At least one model of iPhone has even had two completely different modem chips you could get. It’s not valve cheaping out, it’s them having to order from multiple suppliers to meet demand.
