I have my go-to games that I periodically return to for short gaming sessions or speedrunning, like GTA V, Witcher 3, all Half-Life games, etc. So those games have always to be installed without the option to uninstall them. Add 1-2 current AAA games to that I’m playing simultaneously plus couple of more recent emulated games like BotW or TotK, and your 512GB drive is pretty much full. In my case, 1TB may be sufficient. But if I go through the trouble of upgrading my storage anyway, why not put a 2TB drive inside, just to be sure.

To check what? All non-LE are Samsung, LE are BOE. 512GB glossy will have a Samsung panel.

Even tough that’s an interesting PoC, I wouldn’t rely on an unofficial method to overclock the panel or make the purchasing decision depending on that. But the potentially possible VRR sounds very interesting.

That’s up to you. If it bothers you, probably yes. If it doesn’t, no.

In the Steam Deck, with SteamOS, you can quick suspend your game by pressing the power button, like on the Switch. And then you can return to that game by quick resuming it. You just press the power button, and you’re straight back into the game where you left off. This is the only way it should be handled on a handheld gaming device. On Windows, the experience is just terrible. Manually save the game, quick the game, put your device stand by. Then, wake up your device from stand by, launch the game, load the save game. This is just an unpleasant experience, therefore a Windows based handheld is just a terrible experience.

Glossy is a bit blacker and has a sharper image. But in general, there is not so much difference.

I have a glossy one and I use it quite a lot outside (in a car, on a train). There was never a situation where I had an issue with the screen. Before that, I had the etched LCD and the experience was the same. So the whole thing is truly overblown.

Yea, but now we have some data to prove it. It’s not scientific accurate, but the tendency is there. May help some people in the future making the decision on which model to purchase.

Now that we certainly know this is the case (other thread with over 600 comments, where everyone with the LE has a BOE screen), one can say, that people are very oversensitive to this topic :)

You want to purchase a replacement panel with your own money and replace it yourself? I like fiddling around, but that just sounds unsatisfying, because it’s a brand new device. Also, let’s hope the replacement panels will be the ones from Samsung and not from BOE.

IPS TN lottery. Many salty tears were swallowed back then. The luckiest of all got the double-IPS models. Good times.

Valve will replace it. Fingers crossed that you get one with a healthy panel. The safe bet as of now is to get the non-LE model with a Samsung panel.

The only safe bet here would be to go with the non-LE model to get a Samsung panel. So far I haven’t read about Samsung panels having a problem with dead pixels.

The glossy has a bit better colors/blacks, the etched has a bit better visibility in brightly lit environments. Case closed. Nothing to have hard feelings about.

May be. I got mine today, and man, the screen made me fill with amazement. To me, it’s a huge upgrade, I really couldn’t go back to the LCD screen.

You tried a factory reset after firmware update?

Following the comments here, it looks like that BOE panels indeed are more often affected by dead pixels. Of course it’s not representative, but some tendencies are definitely there.
