I can’t get over the fact that they didn’t try to sharpen the image more after copying it. Like I would’ve thought after doing some test prints and seeing how blurry to shit the image was, they’d try to make it better.
If I got that skin/case sent to me I’d be pissed if it looked like that.
It looks like they took the photo with their camera on a monitor. Critical video on it showed it clearly
Funny, considering Dbrand threatened to rip of several of my designs without credit back in the Nexus 4 days…
Fr?
Dbrands entire schtick is based on getting as close as possible to IP Theft without actually doing it.
As others have pointed out and mentioned map makers and dictionary authors have done this for centuries by adding fictional places or fake words to catch counterfeiters and plagiarists.
I wonder if a fake town name ever became a real place.
Actually, a few have but unfortunately I don’t recall the details .
Bielefeld Germany.
Nice try but we all know it’s still not real.
Unfortunately it has existed since 2019 :(
Oh so you’re part of the conspiracy
^(shhhhhhh)
Finland
Paper towns kinda addresses this
There is a whole chapter about this in a book called The Phantom Atlas.
Dbrand has a lot of little easter eggs, it’s so fun to see what they snuck in there. My steam deck says something about exploding lemons on the battery cover.
The Steamdeck Killswitch case has a snippet of binary code where the stand attaches to the back. If you translate that it says
Fuck Magnets
.That’s a reference to the prototype with a magnet stand, right? It messed with the fan or something.
I work for the government, we work in Geospatial Information matters, that provides topographic maps, basemaps, natural features of our country, one of them is rivers.
There are some suspicion of evidence here and there that even Google Maps using some of our vector features. We can see it clearly when zooming in, the shape and angle of every drawing is exactly the same.
Unlike roads, small rivers should be more unique from one company to another company to draw, because it’s not really clearly seen from satellite imagery. So when it’s exactly the same shape and angle of every vertex, it’s seems they copied ours. Ours are drawn in early 2000s.
But our data can be downloaded easily and free in our website, that’s must be the case, it’s free. But some recognition and attribution could be nice though.
Government materials like that are public domain as far as I know, so anyone is well within their rights to use it in whatever way they see fit, even without attribution. I think that’s a cool feature of the government, not a bug.
Yea I guess you’re right.
And I think we are more than happy we have something that used by other people, for greater community
Certainly it is better than just ended up in box on our warehouse, or just a file in a server no one will ever see it exist, (unless they are academia, scientists or other bodies of government that needs that maps for their work).
I see your point though. It’s all about marketing. And in this capitalist economy that’s sucking us all dry, it should be a law at least to credit the govt in a meaningful and reasonable way, so awareness is raised about govt programs and features.
That tax dollars contribute to perfecting a product that, ultimately, mines the tax payers is just sad. And that people don’t know about it compounds it.
Even more so as these multi national corporations are always trying hard to destroy the little things in life by, I don’t know- lobbying against pro-consumer laws.
Needs to be a change so that government-funded stuff is free to use for non-commercial purposes, but anyone using it for commercial purposes has to pay a licensing fee.
One case a few years back, a TV station filed a DMCA takedown notice against another site that had posted footage that was frame-by-frame identical to a clip on one of their news broadcasts. The “pirated” footage? Footage from the Mars rover. The site they filed the takedown notice against? NASA.
Incredible, what stupidity. Idiocracy is a documentary…
I don’t see why we should pay a fee to use the works commercially when, by participating in this country’s society, we already pay the fee to use it through taxes. We pay the government to make these materials for our free use.
The news station thing is stupid, and has no legs to stand on, legally speaking. It’d just be thrown out when it’s fought.
Because using it commercially means making money off government resources.
Nothing wrong with using government data. It belongs to the public.
Ive recently build a cosplay prop and blueprint, and I’ve added a couple of ‘wrong’ features that will make copies evident.
That was a 10 months of work, and I’m not handing out the real one for free. It’ll eventually leak, as nobody else has made this design in 20 years. But it’s nice to briefly own an entirely unique and accurate representation of something really cool.
Adjacent to the ID 10 T solution still plaguing society we have the Robo7 protocol which has just demonstrated it’s value in ferreting out lazy little weasels suffering classic ID 10 T problems.
What did you expect, it’s a Chinese company
Them to be smart about it since they have a presence outside of China. Meaning they can be prosecuted and something to lose.
There’s a reason why China knick knacks at your local supermarket cost more than ordering straight from China. It’s that the stuff has been somewhat vetted because the seller has to answer to powers that be.
Aren’t they from Hong Kong?
It’s not like they are some random seller on Wish or Temu, they have offices in the USA and American employees. If they want to continue doing business in the US they are going to have to deal with this lawsuit.
Imitation best form of flattery?
Wasn’t Dbrand about to get sued by Sony and they had to edit their design to not get sued?
Casetify is pretty dumb to even not pay attention to the Easter eggs in Dbrand design to copy
I’ve never been able to find this online but long ago I read in a print magazine that Motorola sued another company for copying their microchips. Said copies contained microprinting saying something like “Motorola, when you want to copy the very best”.
Literally 0 iq for a billion dollar company
If they have never opened any of the phones then they would never notice the difference. They are dumb, they just though they can get way with it because on some instances they literally blurred out the dbrand logos on some of them, so they knew very well what they were doing.
I don’t even think they blurred it out. It seems they just right clicked the image on the store page and used that to paste on image and print, copying that way lowered the image quality
That’s a given due to how low res the “glass is glass” phrase is.
True true, so maybe I gave them too much credit. It’s like that kid in class that copied someone else’s answers, they copied everything including the person’s name… 🤦♂️
Didn’t even have the decency to BUY the cases and scan them! Just use the product pictures as far as they can tell!
Right!!! Like as the guy said, home alone thief kind of stupidity
It’s not even “they”… it’s the underpaid graphic designer given the assignment and a boss who doesn’t gaf.
Thats still no excuse.
“never opened any of the phones”
Kinda funny that they could have literally just watched a Video from Zach to see the actual inside of the phones :D
As someone who’s never watched any of this guy’s videos before, I wouldn’t have known that any of the ones they left in were Easter eggs. It seems like they tried to remove them, but just missed a bunch.
I wouldn’t have gotten some of them and I watch pretty much every one of his videos. Mostly the ones from dbrand that I wouldn’t have gotten, but I would have gotten their logo, the illuminati triangle, maybe the R0B07, but only because I know those things about dbrand. “Glass is glass, and glass breaks” also definitely wouldn’t exist inside of a phone.
You may not have known what the Easter eggs were, but casetify definitely should have known about way more than they actually removed. It’s more like they didn’t actually try, they only did the bare minimum to try to remove references to JRE or Dbrand trademarks, but even failed at that.
They are “paper cities” not Easter eggs.
The guy who designed them in collaboration with dBrand (JerryRigsEverything) literally called them easter eggs. They’re references to dBrands history and inside jokes related to Jerry’s YouTube channel.
Caught red handed by DBrand’s trap streets
Thank you for the new (to me) term
Damn that’s dumb as hell.
If you watched his Video, then you’ll see that they did remove some of his stuff and replaced it with theirs but apparently, they’ve still missed some. Kinda the oldest trick in the Book to watermark your stuff in some form or another which is also used by Map Makers to embed random stuff here and there of no importance to the general public but will serve the same purpose to catch other companies blatantly copy/pasting your stuff.
I mean it’s much worse if they had. Since they appear to literally be downloaded images of the promo images they had on their own site, any removals of anything is worse because there’s an intent of malice required to do that
it’s still stealing either way but they literally just took the entirety of the images, and the easter eggs were not the biggest parts that were stolen. The amount of work put into the regular areas that are just meant to look nicer is much more of why they stole it and didn’t do it themselves
Casetify is pretty dumb
yes.
Isn’t Dbrand run by some Dbags? I’ve heard more than once, that they are kind of assholes. I don’t feel bad for them.
I don’t see how this will stand in court…
Dbrand has proof Casetify copied and sold their art work.
It’s not just the design they stole, they right-clicked save-as the product images from dbrand’s website and put them on their own cases with minimal changes. You can see the dbrand logo on Castify’s cases.
How can they tell if it’s actually just the inside of the phone? If they took it from a phone wouldn’t it end up looking the exact same? It’s like trying to copyright a picture of a banana.
Obviously if it’s stolen like they claim they have a case I’m just not sure how they can tell.
Dbrand photoshops the images they take of the insides to look cleaner / more interesting and adds funny messages or secret number codes. All those messages and codes are in casetify’s designs. Also dbrand’s ducking logo.
Glad you aren’t a lawyer.
DBrand added little extra details that didn’t exist on the real boards, officially as Easter eggs but probably also to serve as traps for plagiarists.
Because Casetify copied those extra details it proves they copied DBrand’s actual design rather than just copying the concept and using their own photos of motherboards, which would be allowed.
Seems like an open and shut case to me, unless Casetify’s lawyers can pull off some sort of Chewbacca defense. The Easter Eggs are right there. They didn’t even make a half-assed attempt to Photoshop them out. Even if they win the case, their brand reputation has been tarnished. JRE’s video pops up if you Google them, and nobody’s going to want to buy a (poorly done) knockoff that’s more expensive than the genuine thing.
Ladies and gentleman, this is Chewbacca
They literally ripped Dbrand’s online images, made a couple mods and started selling this shit. Minimum effort autism you can do in your basement with pirated Photoshop and 15 minutes of time.
Minimum effort autism
Bro what the fuck
People blaming the company, but it was really the lazy under paid designer that did this.
It is odd that they’ve collaborated with the Louvre and large corps in the past and somehow let something this stupid slip. But a company that large should have meaures to prevent it happening.
Isn’t Casetify based in Chi-na?
They sell their cases in stores in the US and they have offices in LA. They do a lot of business in the US so an import ban would hurt them more than paying for damages. Asset seizure and freezing accounts is also a thing if they ignore the lawsuit.
They have American offices and I assume they’ve taken legal advice on whether this is worth the cost and assume it will be. Whatever happens the company’s name is tainted now.
They can be based anywhere they want to be, but their money runs through the US and if they lose in court that money can be collected on. They are a large company who would be foolish to close their company because they stole a few million from one creator. They are better off dragging this in court for 5+ years and finally settling then closing up shop just to avoid a relatively small penalty compared to the scale of the company.
It is based in Hong Kong, which is…… yeah you can say that
Hong Kong is in fact China, you heard it here folks. Redditors will even turn their back on Hong Kong sovereignty if it means they can blame the Chinese for something.
I’m Hong Kongese myself. You’d be delusional to think that Hong Kong has any sovereignty to China nowadays, and it is continuously eroding to the point of no return. Plus there is no point defending a corporation. All they care about is making money thus most of them are pro Beijing
But you’re a redditor. So I see what you’re getting at, you don’t have to hide your views here.
Hong Kong never had sovereignty. Let me put it in words you will understand.
Before China liberated Hong Kong Chinese citizens, they were under the anachronistic colonial British government.
They have no consistent morals. It’s basically just “China bad.” When the Hong Kong protests were going on, all of them were saying “Hong Kong is its own country.” But now when it’s convenient, they go back to blame China in some way.
Booger brains complaining about copyright infringement when 95% of American companies willingly sent all their manufacturing to China. Hey, that’s the free market, capitalism, and competition. Really epic stuff.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that Casetify was also the victim of either a 3rd party contractor of their own employee. It seems extremely unlikely a billion dollar company would directly copy something that could be done in a couple hours of work.
More likely they outsourced the tear downs and had no idea they were copied.
I mean maybe they outsourced it but that doesn’t make them a “victim”.
They are profiting off of the copies either way, and if you’re profiting off the work it’s your responsibility to check the work before it is put out to the public.
Any import of said merchandise should either be banned across all of copy write agreed countries until all associated fines and penalties are paid. Then they can sell their own unique designs.
Copyright, not copy write. The word refers to the right to make copies, not the writing of copy.
