More of oled ssd replacement notes than a guide

So a couple things I noticed replacing the ssd ony oled steam deck:

  1. All screws I encountered use t6 torx which is commonly believed to reduce screw stripping.
  2. The screws come out all the way (they are not the type that stay in their slots when unscrewed)
  3. When taking the back cover off, the ifixit guitar picks work very very well. the top comes off easiest, but the next require a side which is much harder (I tried not to apply too much pressure though) but I found taking the route around the trigger helps getting the pick in their but undoing those clips (by twisting the pick) were still a hassle. After I was able to do that I go around from the bottom and back up to the other side
  4. In step below, remember to replace ssd shielding. I find that it slides on and off the ssd. If you forget how the shielding alligns look at ifixit’s video (I used lcd deck video since oled one for specifically replacing the ssd doesn’t seem to be out yet).
  5. The cover that goes over ssd and some copper pipes also has a cable tied to it. Two (? maybe three) screws hold the cover on (dave2d’s video from 2 weeks ago shows him taking it off when the screws are unscrewed and wires aren’t tied down to it). In addition one of the outside screws hold it on (bottom middle-left screw when looking at drck from back). Even though I did not untie the cable to replace ssd but used a bit to unscrew ssd and replace screw holding it in, it might have been best to as not doing this might have caused the cover to be bent where the outside screw goes. To fix this I made sure it was alligned when putting the cover back in before pushing the clips back then. If this happens to you feel free to message me if you need more advice.
  6. Reattaching back cover is easy, just push to reattach clips. The sides where the hands go are the easiest.

I also tore down my lcd to see which fan my lcd deck had but that was over a year ago.

Also the limited edition orange screws are easy to see when they are dropped. If they weren’t I’d still be missing a screw

    Yeah, did my 2tb swap last night and had the same feeling. It was a little more annoying to open than the LCD and that black plate had me second guess myself because I really wanted to unplug the battery first. Some people have carefully yanked it from under the plate and also replaced the SSD without unplugging it or removing the ribbon cable, but I thought it was too risky to do so without seeing what I was actively doing.
