Hi all As many of us I migrate form the original steam deck to the new oled version. I did not anticipate the benefit of the small screen size increase… The screen fill so much bigger thanks to the 0.4inch increase!!! Of course the oled screen nice color are increasing this feeling.
Eh. Not worth me dropping another $500 on a new steam deck tho. I’ll stick with my original LCD. I’ve modified the shit out of it too…
Yup, also with OLED you get pure blacks so whenever you get bars for a 16:9 game it’s not nearly as distracting as LCD. Pure sex.
Yum
Yo man, it’s hard enough trying to cope with an LCD rn.
I don’t need to mod every 16:9 game anymore 😍
This is really noticeable in Elden Ring if you don’t have the 16:10 mod. Used to look pretty bad on the LCD but can barely tell on the OLED.
Hows the elden ring performance? Was sad with it on ps5 but i didnt use an oled tv, hoping the cope is better with it
It runs at high settings 800p mostly locked 30fps. With the 90hz you can also set it to a 45fps lock but in a lot of areas it drops down into the 30s so feels much better locked at 30fps.
I have everything to low except medium shadows and that barely keeps up to get locked 30 outdoors at some places. I don’t think you’re getting high settings. Stop setting people’s expectations up for failure when they see your comment and get hyped for a game they can’t run
Literally been playing the game all day with high settings and 30fps (90hz) refresh rate. Solid 30fps for me so far. Why not mention where in the game the frame rate drops instead of crying?
Outside of stormveil castle, near everywhere in liurnia, Ranni’s rise. Even the 1st enemy camp (gatefront) dips under 30 at low/med. It even stutters in cutscenes and skips frames completely
Where are you in the game that you’re getting 30fps high settings, just sitting indoors?
Buddy, theres many posts about this same topic, high doesnt run much different than medium in this game, probably because theres something bottlenecking the steam otherwise the difference would be bigger
I think it’s also because of the smaller bezels. I know, obvious, but what I mean is, proportionally the decrease in bezels is more substantial than the increase in active area.
Meh.
I can’t literally be the only person who doesn’t really feel like the screen size difference is appreciable. It’s barely more than the width of a toothpick on each side.
The pure blacks making the letterboxing on 16:9 games blend into the bezel is actually a more noticeable improvement, IMO.
My gf says .4 inches is a lot……
cries thank you OP…
You know what else is 7.4 inches?
grabs crotch
Two of these.
Sir do you have two ding dongs or are you talking about your bouncy balls? If so, I think perhaps it may be a good idea to see a doctor… at that point if it’s only height wise it’s no longer round 😭
:(
Thats what she didn’t say.
I went from SD LCD to Lenovo Legion Go 8.8 inch screen. There’s no way back.
The size doesn’t matter. What matters is what you can do with It.
First impressions here are, but he screen fills much better the frame, as you said that 0.4 makes a nice difference, the joysticks are better, they feel a bit more stiff but it’s good compared to LCD, trackpad is working really nice, they did a good job, and the steam and configuration buttons are much more clicky, ofc Oled screen is gorgeous
Saw the title, came for the comments ^^.
It’s insane how much of a difference it really makes! I hated the large bezels on the LCD Deck but just .4 inches definitely shrinks the bezels quite a bit.
It’s 0.4” in the diagonal so it means 11.7% more screen area (22.02 sqin vs 24.6 sqin) so it’s definitely noticeably larger.
Human detection is kicked in significantly when the difference is more than 7% hence this screen update is surely a notable one!
Kudos to steamdeck
This is really interesting! Where did you get the 7% metric? I’m just curious to read more.
The concept is called just noticeable difference. The 7% was sort of taught in my marketing class years ago before internet era but it just hung around in my mind. It probably refers to size or price ratio where we can shift it to shape behaviours without detection
I know there’s a joke here somewhere but it’s just not coming to me
Neither is she
