On Tuesday my Steam Deck arrived 🥳
As an absolut fan of the Steam Controller I’m absolutely convinced of the trackpads. I played Halo for about 30 minutes last night. But I have to say that it was not as comfortable as with the Steam Controller because of the placement of the trackpad.
So I wanted to ask you guys how you are holding the Deck when playing FPS with the trackpads? Do you use some sort of other case etc?
Map the L4 and R4 buttons (top back paddle buttons) to mimic or replace the L1 and R1 buttons. This way it’s a more comfortable grip because you don’t have to position your hold for reaching upward.
Then inherently the trackpads are more comfortable and accessible.
I will usually then map the regular L1 and R1 numbers to something like Screenshot. Basically things I’d like to use occasionally but not all the time.
Thx buddy! Will try that the next days! 😊
I play with right trackpad a lot but it isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world. I basically forget about L1 and R1 as they are too uncomfortable to use quickly.
Put a shift mode on the right pad and turn it into 4 outside buttons and 1 middle button. For a lot of FPS games it will be enough but as I play through Turbo overkill I’m starting to run out of comfortable buttons to use.
I’m an avid trackpad user as well. It took some time adjusting from the Steam Controller to the Steam Deck but I’ve been comfortable using it for months now. I kind of hold it as if I had these grips attached: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wp90qa/steam_deck_grip_extensions_for_large_hands_and/. Most of my palm is empty. When I started I found it easier to hold it with the weight of the Deck supported by a stand or platform but now I mostly use it without anything else.
These are my settings:
As mentioned by others, don’t use Right Trigger for Primary Fire. I would argue it’s actually the worst binding for trackpad-based control because it’s the farthest button from the pad, requiring to stretch your hand uncomfortably and throwing of your aim. I switch it over to Left Trigger, but back paddles should work as well.
