So I’m currently running the 12th gen i7 3.60GHz and lately I feel like an upgrade might be due soon.

During heavy loads I usually have a game up such as Escape From Tarkov or Battlefield 2042 and various other games, but I also have discord up to stream and have my friends screens up as we play, and I also have chrome running with multiple tabs for maps, Crunchyroll, Netflix and such. (I watch anime in between matches and when I’m not too concerned about being competitive).

Would upgrading to 14th gen be worth it? I’d certainly like to upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5, so maybe a bundle upgrade would be in order?

Your 12700k can handle all of that stuff you are running no problem. So do you need to upgrade? Absolutely not. But that shouldn’t stop you, if you enjoy tuning overclocking and all that then sure, get a new CPU and have fun.

Why though? Unless you want a change for the sake of it then sure go for it but realistically there is absolutely no need to upgrade and if you want to maximize your performance in escape from tarkov you would benefit more from switching to amd’s x3d cpu. Also since you want to switch ram you would have to change the enitre combo cpu, mobo and ram.

Only if you want to feel better that you have the last gen, go ahead, spend money basically for nothing :)

Depending on your stream settings in discord, it could be worthwhile in my opinion. I sometimes stream for my friends in discord as well and even going from the 12900k to 13900k was beneficial. Same with the rare occasion that I stream to twitch since I prefer to use CPU encoding rather than GPU encoding.

As for the difference in gaming with a web browser and some videos up, I think that would most likely be unnoticeable.

Looking back on my good ol 2600K Man, those were the days. A (now) 12 y/o quad-core CPU with OC headroom to 5Ghz (on an AIO anyway). Even with my current 5600 being unable to hit 5Ghz, and with the massively better IPC & efficiency, I do still miss those simpler times. Now I’m looking to upgrade to a 12700K or better cause games are too unoptimized these days for only 6c/12t, mainly due to current gen consoles having 8c/16t to work with

Very simple, what is your current system not able to do?

From there see if with the upgrade will it be able to, if its the same= no upgrade. If its not the same=upgrade

If you have all that stuff running in the background, it might be worth considering. I saw a HUGE benefit going from a 12700 straight to a 13900K. All that small fry stuff gets put in the 16 e-cores and the game runs, uncontested, in the 8 P-cores. Everything is super smooth and snappy. Love it.

I usually have Edge, Discord, Spotify, VPN, etc all running in the bg so it was a big upgrade for me. Also a big upgrade for my video editing and streaming.

That is pretty nice. Over here I often stream/record, and have optimized windows and cut out as much background app noise as possible. While it might be nice to not have to do that, I’m sure I’d keep doing it out of habit even with a more powerful cpu

just stay in the 12th gen, because the 14th gen didn’t give that big jump in performance

Probably not. Im on 12th gen and waiting another 3+ years to upgrade. Just lower settings. A gpu would be a better upgrade path.

Went from 12700k to a 14900k and don’t regret it at all. Definitely go DDR5. I’m running 48gb DDR5 7200mhz CL34 no issues at all. Motherboard: Asus z790 Maximus Dark Hero

Maybe in 5 years if you can add a bit of money to upgrade. Now, no way you will notice any change…

Save up for 15th gen IMO. What GPU do you have?

Also, I’d always recommend ignoring going after a brand, if Intel dominates the games that you play, go for Intel, if AMD dominates, go for AMD.

The current gen still maxes out at 8 P cores, so no, there won’t be any noticeable improvements. Things like UI hardware acceleration, GNA (if you use Krips), and even those 4 little E cores are enough for these small tasks.
