I’m looking to grab some 8200/8400 DDR5, and maybe run it at ~8000 MT/s or so and tightly trim timings. I’m semi-planning to water cool the RAM, based on what I’ve been seeing regarding most people’s overclocked RAM temperatures. Hoping to get some feedback from those of you running OC DDR5 (7000+ MT/s). What cooling you use?
Regarding build, I’m going APEX ENCORE and 14900k - so I don’t expect to be limited from the IMC.
Why not going for the 14900KF? cheaper and probably you can push it more because it doesn’t have iGPU.
The Apex Encore does not have iGPU support anyways.
I’m on a 13900ks with 2x24 8200 v-color ddr5. Booted right up on xmp profile and temps are 27-30c on water.
What’s your water block / heat spreader combo? I’m still deciding.
I’m using supercool direct chip water block
Did you stress test yet? What are Temps under prime95 etc?
lol. No I haven’t. Those temps are while gaming for a couple hours. I’m on a mora420 with cpu direct die to ram then gpu if that helps any.
What cpu water block you end up going with?
You should always rune prime95 on a new build especially OC like you are on RAM. I would be interested to see your Temps… because the RAM block you’re using looks decent - may pick it up.
Supercool direct die what I’m using on my KS.
Left it on overnight and this is the results:
ngl I’m shocked it’s not errored out at 15h when the dimms are hitting 78°c, zero active cooling and stock heatsinks
It’s open bench though not in a case, still have to fully assemble the rest of it so I’m stopping it there I think
Will re-update when that bot reminds me
But yeah, so far, seems like typical DDR5: Nothing online regarding it seems to align with my experience from any source at all that I would have normally regarded as either trustworthy or an authority on the topic 🤷
What RAM test is that?
Thanks for doing this man. I always like to run PRIME95 for RAM/CPU configuration verification.
I just put a pair of GSkill Trident 7600s in my mobo as they came and they are running fine. The top exhaust fan is pretty close to the RAMs, but that is all.
Am I doing something wrong?
Likely not doing anything wrong, but with ddr5, who knows
Get Ram Test and see if it’s stable for a day or two would be my recommendation
If you get errors eventually down the road you’ll be getting blue screens in games, and if severe enough you’ll get a corrupt windows install given enough time
The sensor on my 2x16GB 7800 g skill kit started glitching after 46c with a 140mm 1200rpm fan blowing directly on them and would report 12c and then crash. Same sticks with waterblocks don’t report ever hitting 30c at 1.5v. Normally 25-28c after 8 hours of CoD and the room heating up to 80F. They report 22-23c at idle with 72F ambients.
Well, I can get some g.skill 8,000s with stock heatsinks and no fan on it errorless for ~4 hours on a z790 ProArt, 14900k on air (NH-D15) @ 7600
I reeeealllly doubt they’re actually errorless for ~5-7 days though as they’re hitting 62°c, and I don’t care really to validate that long on a board I don’t intend to daily any more: in my mind anything +50°c is going to error sub-12 hours
My Encore comes in tomorrow so I can tell you in a few days where it lands with stock heatsinks, basic xmp, same setup but with a fan on the ram (not the encore fan)
after I get that I plan on taking the crap g.skill heatsink off and putting them in some Bykski Copper Airs, I’m guessing they’re going to get about 7800 errorless (5 day stress) but who knows. Ddr5 is a hot mess. But that’s what makes it fun eh
Yeah, I’d love to hear how your encore runs along with the RAM.
My goal is to keep the dimms under 40C, and so far water seems the only way based on what I’m seeing others say. But - if those heatsinks paired with a high CFM fan on top do the trick, I’d have no issue going that route.
Keep me posted buddy
Know it’s 2 weeks out, but I was quite wrong about the Bykskis
If your goal is to keep them sub-40 the Bykskis will work
Even running RAM Test they’re usually sub-40c but their peaks are pretty up there
(active cooled with a 120mm + Encore fan, Bykski heatspreaders, Thermal Grizzly 1,5mm thermal pads)
Don’t expect the Bykskis to get you sub-40 or even at 40°c
I had them on a teamgroup DRR5-2x16-7200 kit before this and they were ≈46:43°c, A2 dimm was 46 B2 was 43
(2x16-7200 Teamgroup kit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BG5LZQ6M/
(2x24-8000 G.skill kit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2BJV4MG/
Pushing them harder than that kit in every way but voltage, since the Teamgroup kit was running 1.4 and the g.skill kit is 1.35
if those heatsinks paired with a high CFM fan on top do the trick, l’d have no issue going that route.
You’re going to hate me for this once you see their pricetag and shipping costs:
Web search: " Apex Stealth Fans Alphacool "
Look at their CFM and chart data
Would love to see those fans tested against t30’s
A fan even running at 3k RPM directly on the dimms won’t get you below 40C. At least not with the Gskill 2x24 kit I have. Best I can do during stress testing is 41-42C (25C ambient) at 8200C36 and 1.52v VDD. This is with a 3k Noctua Industrial.
Yeah I’m not doing a 3k industrial on my ram for a daily rig. I’d smash it after an hour with the drone 😅😅🫠
Was considering an A14 or A20 on a custom mount hanging from the top of the case: going into a Fractal Torrent, so no top fans
Long term planning on doing a 3d printed blower style forced air setup like I’ve seen a few people here on Reddit do
Well I only run it at high RPM for stress testing. Running it at 1000-1200 RPM is enough to stay below 40C for my daily use, mostly gaming. So it’s not loud at all.
So, this is preliminary as it’s only been ~4 hours:
XMP I, No ram modifications (stock heatspreaders), no direct active ram cooling ourside of the AIO pump’s fan, and 3 pull fans blowing over the mobo as if it were in a case (it’s on its box, no case open air)
ambient is 69°f/20.5°c
This is the kit of ram:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2BJV4MG
14900k, 4090, z790 encore, 420mm aio (arctic ii + Kryosheet)
Unbelievably it still hasn’t errored even though it’s neared 80°c on the ram I’m so intrigued I’m tempted to just leave it like this until it does lmao
