Spent €300 or something on a watch direct from Apple.

Specifically got it for running without my iPhone so I can track runs and also listen to podcasts.

Firstly, pocketcasts wants a subscription for the pleasure of listening on my very expensive wrist device. Ok let’s try Apple Podcasts.

No matter what I do, it only plays on the phone. Earphones connected to the watch is fine. But for the life of me I cannot get the podcast to play on my watch.

When I hit PLAY on the watch, without fail it starts on the phone.

I’ve tried various things and nothing changes it.

If this is a likely and longstanding issue then that’s fine as it’s going back for a refund anyway.

But just what is going on or what am I doing wrong? Why is it so complicated?

I’m not exactly a Luddite either.

The return is in process and need to drop it at a point but just wanted to know what I did or didn’t do wrong.

The Apple Watch can be a great smartwatch for some people, but not for all.

I hope that you can find a smartwatch that match your preferences and needs. The good part is that now there are many options available to choose from 👍

It is. It’s what I use so I can leave my phone at home while doing cardio. It’s worked almost flawlessly for me. Sometimes, for some reason, some episodes don’t download to the watch, but they stream just fine so I’ve been insufficiently motivated to look into it too much. It happens maybe one morning a month.

Nobody is actually telling you how to solve this lol. If you’re on WiFi it should work on its own but if you are and it still isn’t working try syncing podcasts via the watch app, go to podcasts and select how many to sync. Once downloaded to the watch you’ll be good to go.

Yes - OP needs to go in Watch app and make sure podcasts are loaded to the Apple Watch. And then make sure headphones are connected to the Apple Watch as well. If OP is having problems making sure this is working, turn off the phone.

I thought Apple Watch is designed to work specifically with iPhone?

Did you spend the money to get a data plan?
