I need to vent a bit but I need to know how common this is.

On my Galaxy S3, S5, S8, and now S21 Ultra, I’ve had issues with my charging port and needing the cable in a very specific way on a table or it doesn’t charge.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it me? Does it just need cleaned or are the charging ports durability really that garbage?

I’ve dealt with it since about 15mths into owning it, had it 3yrs in April 2024, am getting so sick of this.

    Use a wood toothpick to clean the pocket lint out. You’ll probably be amazed how much you can dig out of there.

    Probably lint, clean out the port. Had this happen with my s8 and all it need was the lint out of the port.

      How easy is it to damage/break with a floss stick? Genuinely for real. I can pay about $12 USD for someone to clean it as am nervous but if its not a big deal I’ll attempt it myself.

    Have you tried another cable? I’ve never had any issue with the port on any phone. However, every cable I’ve used will eventually wear out and behaves like you described. A new cable always solves the problem.

    I’ve had similar issues with my Galaxy Note20 Ultra. To be honest with my experience it’ll be every time I plug in the charger that it’ll go from 2hrs to 8hrs on charge. It could be just the wire that you use for charging

    S4, Note4, Note 6, Note 7, S7 Edge, Note 8, Note 9, Note 10, Note 20, S22U, S23U, Fold 4 then multiply that by two since my wife and I both had each, and we’ve never had this issue. You’re handling your phone or positioning it wrong when it’s plugged in.

    You keep having the same issue and the common denominator is you.

    I also have this issue with my S7, S9, S10e and now my S21. For my S21 I have been wirelessly changing it almost exclusively for 2 years to prevent it but still the port can barely hold the cable. And when I do use a cable it’s the one that came with the phone. And yes I’ve cleaned the port.

    It’s a dust issue. I had this problem with my phone too. The phone stopped charging and the cable stopped fitting in the port and kept falling out. Went to the service center and they removed the dust and the phone port was as good as new.

    I recommend using a dust cap for the port. And wirelessly charge whenever possible to save your port for when you need it

    In my experience it’s the charging part of the phone. If you put a GOOD new plug in, it should work alright for a while. My s8 did it so badly I had to buy a wireless charger, which the whole family wants all the time because they’ve got the same issue, and all have reasonably new phones (1-3 y/o). My s20fe is the only one that still charges with the cable. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s built in, so you’ll buy a new one instead of paying however much it is to get it fixed.

    Have you ever thought you broke your charging cable(s)?

    the port itself has no give, so you cannot really wriggle the port in the phone - USB C connector with USB C cable - the contact cannot be faulted most of the time.

    The issue happens typically when you yank the charging cable out by the cord instead of pulling the plug out. Or when you use the wire to pull the phone towards you. You break the cable and now you have to force the cable in a certain way so that the internal wires connect again and you can charge.

    Seems like a great reason to go wireless charging to me. I don’t plug anything if I can help it into my charge port.
