This is giving me flashbacks to the much better rumored Switch Pro and when the announcement for that new Switch came, all we got was an OLED display, thinner bezels (sound familiar?) and twice the internal storage. I have both Switches, and let me tell you, side by side LCD and OLED it wasn’t worth shelling out $350, and the new Deck is worth almost double the price so. It does kinda suck for those who maybe bought it recently, but no one could’ve seen it coming, it was rumored but never confirmed, it wasn’t even leaked and Valve repeatedly stated they wouldn’t make a new Deck anytime soon. If you are able to return it and grab the new OLED Deck instead (if you’re in the US or Canada that is) it’s your money at the end of the day so I can’t tell you how to spend it, but I’m more than satisfied with my Deck and I’ll happily wait for the Deck 2 whenever that arrives.

My issue is more that they JUST released “affordable refurbished steam decks” 3 months ago. Which were more expensive than a new one would be now (and has now tanked a LOT in resale value). And there is no way they weren’t fully aware of that when they launched it.

They could’ce released the refurbs later, which saves the customer money. Or had more time in between these launches, which makes the customer not feel like they overspent/regret their purchase.

The only thing I’m bummed about is that I get a lot of eye strain from the current lcd, and there’s a chance oled wouldn’t have the same issues. But I never would have known until I bought it, and wouldn’t know if it’s an improvement or not

My current steamdeck gets used mostly as a controller for my PC connected to my OLED tv. I don’t even really need a screen on this thing for the use it gets. But I’ll be damned if I don’t want to buy one…

Rather than a steam deck refresh what we really need is new steam controller with the same control scheme as the steam deck. I’d buy like 4 of those in a heartbeat if they ever become a thing.

I’m not mad that they refreshed. I’m mad that I bought one a few days ago and for the same money I’ve could have gotten twice the storage, better screen, bigger battery.

I’m on a similar boat. Except Valve doesn’t reach here so I can do nothing about it.

I’m freaking ecstatic about it. I literally ordered a 64gb yesterday but I’ve now cancelled it and ordered a 512gb LCD.

The new Deck is not almost twice as much as my old Deck. I got the 512gb Deck and it was over $600 after taxes. The new Deck with 512gb is no where near twice as much as my old Deck.

I’m not buying the new one because I don’t have time to play.

They came out with this revision way too quickly, the entire sub is either huffing copium or planning on buying an oled deck

It’s not “huffing copium” to be happy with the deck I have. And those that are whining about the oled model now and purchase it anyway will just come whine about not having had the oled model for 14 years before valve releases the steam deck 2, despite knowing it is planned for 2025/26

Way too quickly? It was like a year and a half after release, and this is obviously not a major upgrade like a “steam deck 2” would be.

So, how long is appropriate between launches for a mid-generation revision, in your opinion?

It’s disengenious to say that a SD2 was ‘years away’ while you knew you were working on this refresh, which would lead to a drop in price for ‘old stock’ and drop the bottom out of the 2nd hand market for those that might want to sell and upgrade.

Strongly disagree with the premise about the Switch OLED. It’s my favorite console of all time and I was very happy migrating to the Switch OLED model from the original. We got a massive battery life boost, amazing display, and a variety of small improvements. Steam Deck OLED looks to be the same sort of upgrade. This is exactly what I wanted- it fixes all the biggest drawbacks of the Deck: display, noise, battery

I almost exclusively use mine for old games and emulation anyway. Don’t enjoy new games at low settings/fps on it. For that I’ll just wait for a next gen upgrade

But they’re going to focus all their updates on fixing issues with the new model now for a few months at least. The existing deck OS is so buggy at times, especially when trying to use it docked. I’m sad those won’t get fixed for ages

I use mine sporadically so this isn’t a deal breaker for me. It’s one of those, man they really made some nice improvements - but not enough for me to buy another right now - moments. 😂

Man that felt really adult to say.
