I made this exact mistake when the Switch OLED came out. I got caught up in hype, I bought the new one, and slowly it dawned on me that I just spent 300 extra dollars for exactly the same machine I already had, and a screen that, as good as it was, was NOT worth that 300 dollars.

If you don’t own a Steam deck, then go nuts! Do what you want.

If you already own a Steam Deck, you already own everything you actually wanted a Steam deck for. An OLED screen is not going to make the games you already play somehow magically better. You’re fine. Chill out

Terrible take. I sold my Switch tablet and bought a new OLED one and that was an amazing decision. It actually made me happy to play in handheld mode.

I am totally fine with my original one. The battery is enough for casual gameplay. I am still amazed at how awesome the LCD screen looks, I add vibrant deck for some games.

Yeah I want to see a comparison of the OLED vs the LCD with vibrant deck on. I know its not the same colorspace… but it looks way, way better than without Vibrant Deck.

The oled blacks would be awesome for letterboxed games though…

I had the original switch and upgraded to the OLED version. It was worth the upgrade, for me. I don’t need you to make a post to tell me what I don’t need to buy with my own money. People can make their own minds up, they don’t need you telling them.

I put my old switch for sale because I wanted the oled screen for handheld + built in ethernet in the dock for smash. No regrets. I’m gonna do the same again with the deck. This is a significant upgrade in my opinion.

I’m upgrading because I want to, I love OLED displays and the list of improvements they have made with the rest of the device are worth it imo.

I have some pretty bad light bleed on my 256gb model, and the OLED will get rid of that ever being an issue again.

“Need” is the wrong word to use in this sub. The Deck is, at the end of the day, a toy. No one needs it.

That said, from day 1 the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be different about the Deck is the screen. I want a steam Deck that has a screen as nice as my TV and my phone. Worth is relative and depends on your means. For me the upgrade is worth it, for others it’s not. Both of these things are fine. You’re valid for not wanting to upgrade.

the main reason i considered the switch oled a good upgrade wasn’t the screen (though it was a nice touch). it was that my v1 switches battery was barely keeping up for an hour of playtime. the steam decks haven’t been around long enough to have that be an issue yet

I care more about the battery life than the screen, that’s what’s making me really consider going for it.

I don’t need it. I already have a friend who wants to buy my old deck, so I lose just about nothing in upgrading. I want it, I’m financially stable, so I’m getting it.

It’s my money, and I don’t need to be told how to spend it. Thank you.

I don’t own a Steam Deck but I would be perfectly happy with the original model, it’s still decent. It will come down in price now, which is great.
