Either they did not show up to my local micro center or they sold out before they went live. They were suppose to drop on Monday, before I left the house to go get one I looked at the website and it had changed to November 3rd.

When the Pi 4 was perpetually out of stock, there were no real good alternatives for the projects that actually needed it. Yes, there were a lot of other SBCs, but the software support was not nearly as good as the Pi. The Pi 5 is so new that there aren’t really any existing project that would require one, so for those cases, just get a Pi 4. The stock situation has been much better the past few months.

For new projects, again just go with a Pi 4 for now, or maybe one of the alternative SBCs .

For those that want to build some sort of gaming/emulation system, for double the retail price of a Pi 5, just buy a mini PC. Or better yet an old business desktop SFF PC if you don’t mind the size/power consumption.

There are a lot of alternatives to the Pi 5 right now – no need to reward those fucking scalpers.

It’s true that there are alternatives, like a used mini-PC, or an Orange Pi. On the other hand, you can just wait a bit. It’s not the same situation with the Pi 4 being perpetually out of stock for years. That was because of ongoing chip shortages during the pandemic, and the subsequent backlog, which is no longer an issue. This is just because it’s a new product, so there are a ton of pre-orders. Some of those are scalpers who are thinking that the availability will remain low, and sustain stupid prices, but I think they’ll be disappointed. Once the initial rush is cleared out, it should be fine.

Garbage people do a shitty thing to fans/hobbyists. At this point this is not news. Any hobby I have that’s even moderately popular, has been reduced to me reading about it.

I think it’s also worth noting that the RPI foundation prioritizes businesses rather than hobbyists. We get nothing in terms of stock.

Just a suggestion, variegated plants are pretty cool too. Like the tropical vine ones. Florida Beauty, Cebu Blue, Monstera — but variegated. They grow slower because they are missing some chlorophyll, and they look cool. Throw them in a bowl (with drainage holes) of sphagnum moss and they’ll be happy forever.

It’s not a market abuse. They are closing the artificial gap in the supply and demand curve caused by Raspberry Pi Ltd and other retailers. Its literally a basic function of markets.

Wouldn’t that cause used goods to become basically pointless to sell?

You can add limits, we have something like that in Poland, if you sell more than SOME_AMOUNT_OF_MONEY in a year in used goods, you’re considered a business and have to pay income taxes. There are also tax procedures that determine if something was bought to be used and then sold after some time or someone basically is buying stuff from retail just to sell at higher prices. You can also clamp resell value in such cases. Possibilities are limited only by our imagination and throughput of tax controllers.

Make the scalpers choke on their inventory. On everything, not just RPIs. This is a problem created by all of us. The scalpers wouldn’t do this if there was no market for them.

Nah, it’s a common sense. Too bad many people are lacking it and will happily pay 200% or 300% of MSRP, because they must have newest and shiniest stuff.

I have been waiting literally 3 years to buy a Pi zero 2 W at its MSRP, So I can upgrade the pi zero that runs my 3d printer with something that can also handle video processing.

I only just was able to get one last week… (canakit has em in case anyone need one)

      I don’t think so.

Selling scarce items for high prices is pretty much basic economics and the heart of capitalism: if demand remains high and the supply goes down, prices go up.

If people don’t like the game, they don’t have to play it. I don’t.

That defeats the entire purpose of the raspberry pi. Who the hell would buy what’s supposed to be a cheap thing to fiddle with from someone selling it at a premium?
