The thing that irks me about these new model releases is I don’t want to upgrade for a minor improvement and then a year later a new model with slightly better improvements drops and I have to spend another $300+ for it. I’d rather Valve to offer the ability to open a return request and upgrade for the price of the modules and they upgrade your old model Deck with new parts you selected. It also keeps older model Steam Decks in circulation and keeps them relevant and prevents waste.

Welcome to PC gaming, every couple months a new GPU,CPU, or some other tech upgrade is being released all the time

I was also freaked out when Gaben broke into my house and forced me to upgrade to the OLED model.

You have the ability now… It’s called ebay, craigslist, etc.

I was hoping for a trade-in program too for ease of upgrading, especially since it gives Valve a bunch more refurb stock to resell later. But at the end of the day if you want the OLED bad enough just sell your LCD unit and put the money towards it.

The old deck will be able to play exactly the same games as the OLED one. This is not a forced update. They haven’t stuck an RDNA 3 chip in it forcing you to upgrade for performance - there are just some nice quality of life improvements and will hopefully get more people into the space. Personally think valve smashed it out of the park with this one

I am having trouble responding to this with saying anything ban worthy.

Suffice to say you should skip less school and do fewer braincell killing drugs.

I like to chase new things but even I find it hard to agree with OP logic.

If U can’t afford to chase then slow down, 1 to 2 years the oled still be there. Steam deck 2 maybe there.

It’s not like steam suddenly change their game format rendering Ur 1st gen steamdeck not usable.

(I am looking at some handphone manufacturer who sort of induced planned obsolete with certain updates which may slow down older phones- at least Samsung did it many years back for my exp)

I mean, we don’t ask laptop manufacturers to do this, why are we asking Valve for this? Valve has stated that they treat this like a PC just in a different form factor.

Keep in mind that even though there’s no major performance upgrade, much of the Deck OLED was redesigned from the ground up. They’d pretty much have to rebuild your Deck if they offered an “upgrade” program that you’re asking for. The internals are very much different compared to the original Deck.

This probably opens a whole world of complex logistics Valve is not prepared/care for.

It sucks, but this is the reality of every electronic ever. You can always sell yours on eBay. Decks sells pretty fast over there.

You can also wait for the SteamDeck 2 if you don’t want to contribute to waste.

I could never imagine being this entitled. new models of electronic devices are always being released as that is what the market demands. You don’t need to always upgrade. Wait a while and upgrafe when appropriate. Valve already sells these at a loss and you expect to get the new model without paying full price?

I don’t think valve wants to hold onto a bunch of decks we have opened up and messed with then try to resell those decks while taking a huge hit on newer deck prices because they are giving consumers a discount on the price.

Doesn’t add up cost/ money wise for them.

I want the OLED but I cant get it because mine works perfectly fine and no one wants to buy it. I’m in limbo and will just stick with my deck because the price it will sell for is pretty much worthless to me.

It was the screen and the huge bezels that bothered me most with the deck. I was hoping for a 7.7" upgrade at some point in time, but no, the deck is apparently a disposable device according to Valve. Wasn’t the deck advertised as modular and upgradeable? Their insane sudden price drop makes selling and buying OLED also problematic. I’m pissed, created a ticket at their support and will pester them with chatgpt generated reasoning until I get at minimum an honest apology (or a discount 😉 ).
