Question for people saying this review is paid. Is it only “paid” when something you don’t like gets positively reviewed?

You would think someone that is in the know about handhelds and specifically the SteamDeck would have the reasoning to figure that out but here we are
it feels like ipad vs iphone. I agree the portal is great device, but it doesn’t mean they can be compared.
lol it’s so silly. I have both cause I like portables and love them both for wildly different use cases. Way too many differences for a direct comparison. Deck is dope, portal is also dope, neither are a replacement for the other.

The only negative thing I have to say about the steamdeck is my tiny lady hands get tired holding it after awhile. But the same happens during a hand job so it’s worth it.

This is a very specific use case. It comes as no surprise that a device built from the ground up to be a streaming solution for PlayStation is better suited than a handheld PC
Well, I think it’s more of a review on how well it is for its purpose? At least that’s how I see it since SD at that time is not yet polished and doesn’t have a clear bright future ahead while Portal is really great on what its designed to do but still not worth it to buy imo if you have SD or backbone or maybe even a smartphone/tablet/ipad.
IGN is immensely incompetent, always have been. They cater to the most casual of casuals, so are there testers.

Seriously. Just downvote these posts too. The PSPortal is a great device for what it is meant to do. The Steamdeck is a great device for what it is meant to do.

The Steam Deck experience from two years ago is very different from the Steam Deck experience in late 2023. IMO, I think IGN kind of got it right giving the launch Steam Deck a 7. Over the last two years of updates, the experience is considerably better now; hence the 9 for the OLED Deck.
My Deck experience as a new owner is so different from what I read and saw at launch. It’s a completely different device almost, in terms of software but also the hardware. My battery life is better, no fan issues… Hell, they even just improved the screen essentially via a software update.
Exactly. They’re different products with different goals. If I give a stapler a 10/10, that doesn’t mean I’d rather have the stapler than my Steam Deck. It means the stapler accomplishes its goals perfectly.

Point to the doll where PS Portal touched you
200$ to do what your phone does free, or you can get a $100 backbone to attach to your phone and it’s essentially this device. Or you could spend $150 more than that and get a steam deck which can do what this device does except is an entire gaming PC. It’s also worth noting that this thing doesn’t have Bluetooth capability, cannot stream through mobile data and doesn’t have any new or special features to it. If this device was maybe $110 so it was only 10 bucks more than the backbone controller, then I’d say okay that makes sense. Maybe even 120. $200 for this device is ridiculous considering how crappy it is. They had no business giving it a score higher than a five out of 10, And I’m convinced that that review score was paid for.

Because there’s no objective reality. They both do extremelty different things. They were most likely both reviewed against what they claimed to do. The Playstaion Portal isn’t and has never even attempted to be a rival for any other handheld.
Maybe it’s just really good at being a device to stream your PS5 to?
