It just underscores the need for it.
I wouldn’t use an iPhone 5 unless you like having unpatched security flaws on an internet connected device…
Just a bad idea all around in my opinion
Our vision is that we work as if we are one company.
Sounds like antitrust regulators would absolutely love that…
Apple shouldn’t be the one who devices what the users end up actually using… they should compete to have the best product, and let the users decide for themselves.
Much ado about Nothing…
So will they also add the ability for alternative messaging apps to be able to send / receive messages?
iMessage isn’t popular just because it’s iMessage, it’s popular because it’s the priority messaging system and seamlessly integrates with “normal” SMS/MMS messages.
I think Apple should make a MessageKit framework (or something like that) to enable apps the ability to essentially replace the messages app.
Apple makes and locks in so many default apps, and it’s kind of annoying honestly.
I hope this interoperability will mean something like Trillian could exist for the modern age… a single app that lets you communicate with everyone regardless of the platform they use. it’s a shame XMPP didn’t really take off
They should’ve just cut the cost of ram and storage upgrades to 1/3 of what they normally cost… they’d still be making bank on them…
This is not nearly as big of an issue as it appears…
It’s not exclusive to iOS, and there’s nothing preventing someone from making a web app that does the exact same thing…
People worry there’s going to be full malware getting released that scans your files and other app data the minute you install it… but that’s not how iOS works… that isn’t even how Android works.
Money.
It’s always about money…
Not including these items allows them to make smaller boxes, which means they can fit more of them in a shipment, which means they save money… and that’s not even including the amount they saved by not giving away those items.
Of course they will. And I highly doubt they’ll win.
This is one last Hail Mary pass for them to avoid having to open up their walled garden.
Sideloading… worldwide.
More access to the NFC chip (let apps simulate an arbitrary tag, at the NFC protocol level)
Looking forward to the day this is made available everywhere! It’s ridiculous to geolock major features like this.
Yeah, no… it doesn’t work that way.
Apple Inc. agreed to pay $25 million to settle a Department of Justice case alleging that the iPhone maker illegally discriminated against US citizens in hiring.
The department said in a statement Thursday that Apple showed bias against US workers as part of recruitment for PERM, the permanent labor certification program. The Cupertino, California-based technology giant didn’t advertise such positions on its website and made it more difficult for workers to apply for the jobs, the DOJ said.
Apple required job seekers to apply via paper mail and didn’t allow electronic submission, as it does for other openings, according to the department. That made it harder for people outside the PERM program to get hired, the department said.
The PERM program is designed to let companies sponsor foreign workers for permanent resident status, but it stipulates that employers can’t show a bias against applicants who may be citizens or already have permission to work in the US.
Apple’s approach “nearly always resulted in few or no applications to PERM positions” from those kinds of candidates, according to the department. The $25 million payment includes $18.25 million in back pay for those discriminated against and $6.75 million in fines.
“Creating unlawful barriers that make it harder for someone to seek a job because of their citizenship status will not be tolerated,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the department’s Civil Rights Division.
Apple said that “when we realized we had unintentionally not been following the DOJ standard, we agreed to a settlement addressing their concerns.” The company added that it “implemented a robust remediation plan to comply with the requirements of various government agencies as we continue to hire American workers and grow in the US.”
Ninety percent of Apple’s US positions are filled by American workers, the company said.
And despite that they still don’t prevent you from installing Windows, or “sideloading” games from other stores… but ultimately, they don’t have to because they know that Steam is an incredible storefront that people want to use.
I don’t get why Apple is so concerned about sideloading eating into their profits. If the App Store is truly as good as they say it is, they shouldn’t have any problem keeping developers on board, and if they do, then clearly, it isn’t as good as other options
Valve may sell Steam Deck at a loss, but they know people will willingly use Steam enough for them to cover those costs.
There’s no good reason to hike the price, but they absolutely will… it may very well even be a build to order option.
Apple is already making ridiculous markup on their products, I don’t think an OLED would make for a huge price hike honestly, and it would make their products even more enticing.
I’m kind of surprised OLED withProMotion wasn’t added to the new MacBook Pros.
It’s one device where color accuracy can be extremely important, and OLED is amazing at that.
Pirated iOS apps are already a thing…
Those who want to pirate will find a way, and the rest will either just pay for it, or not get it to begin with.
The App Store and play store both need the option of demos… or at the option of the developer, time limited trials of the full app.
