If you want to play older, lesser games with a better screen go Deck - if you want to play newer more demanding AAA’s then choose any Z1 extreme over the Deck.
Personally I’m going for the Go for the extra improvements & 2 x USB4 plus that whopping brilliant screen.
AS a side note - I’ve always loved my 512gb etched screen, never been dissatisfied apart from the size, always wished it was bigger for better reading of screen.
Fable Anniversary plays lovely & has great humour - nothing like BG3, I don’t think but it’s a buttery smooth game with chuckles.
Playing handheld is a totally different experience, it’s like playing a completely different game almost. As long as the game isn’t too demanding you’ll have fun & remote any games that run sluggish

Not for me, I have Witcher on PS5 & Deck - everything on PS5 via Chiaki is perfect, EVERY game I’ve duplicated has been rubbish in comparison - there is one exception, “Dying Light” it plays excellently with no stuttering (that I’ve found so far at least) Cost? The first games I bought were HZD, Days Gone & later GOW (all free on PS5) they cost an additional £150 & they played - but not very well. CryoUtilities2 has helped run them better for me now though.
Yup, when I say Chiaki I’m saying Chiaki4 also. I didn’t do anything other than that the information guide said. I’ve never tried anywhere other than at home, I play in the living room, network is all wired apart from Deck which uses its WiFi. The WiFi on my Deck has always been shit, always constantly dropping off from the Steam system - after a long time I found a fix, switch on developer options & there’s a WiFi option (can’t remember it offhand) but you turn it to the opposite of what it is by default so on or off.
That may be why my Chiaki works flawlessly - I have no idea.
Install Chiaki & play all your PS5 AAA’s on the Deck, it’ll give you the handheld experience without the cost of duplication & much better/faster than the Steam duplicates with the highest quality & fps.
That’s how I now mostly use my deck - older PC games - Deck anything new - PS5 it’s saving me a fortune on duplication & importantly internal storage.
A bit of a silly question really. One persons chill may another’s boring. What “chills” you is what chills you, HZD chills me just running around killing anything & everything that moves but I wouldn’t ever call it a “chill” out game…
… But PS4 titles (OLD) PS4 AAA’s don’t run well. My first 3 AAA’s titles were HZD, Days Gone & later GOW - I had all 3 on my PS5 but these came at a cost of £150 on Steam.
I primarily want play AAA’s - my 512gb can’t play them well - lots of slowdown, low fps. I now play those same games via Chiaki because it trounces the Steam duplicates.
I’m going for the Legion Go once the 1tb comes to the UK market. The other way would be to put up with the limitations of my much slower Deck until the Z2 extreme becomes the new chipset to have in a year or so.
Chiaki & PS5 is a great combination, I just wanted the 8.8’ screen now, I can read all the text on screen easily, I struggle with the Deck.
I’ve always played plugged in. Bought at UK preorder launch & my battery stats look exactly the same when not plugged in.
If anything I’d say my battery would be in better condition because its never been put under load for long periods of time. It’s never had the stress of running low & recharging.
But then I don’t really care I always plug it up when playing…
It would be speed for me. Not bothered about battery life don’t use it much. But it would have to be next gen to the Z1 extreme - that would be the future.
The Deck has never been fast enough for me to play the AAA’s I wanted to play (old PS4 titles) they play, but not without a lot of slowdowns, stuttering. I learned to put up with em, but expected them to be better due to the “Deck verified” stamp of approval - that was BEFORE I preordered, I now realise that moniker means bugger all.

The Deck DOESN’T perform as a desktop PC, it performs as a Linux desktop PC & that is totally different to the Windows PC you’re talking about & experienced - forget Word & Excel - it’ll be a Linux “equivalent” be warned.
Add 90 & get a true new generation handheld Legion Go. It’s a better faster machine with far more features & it trounces my 2 512gb decks now on release - thats only going to get better as the patches, drivers, bug fixes Steam have applied over almost 2 years gets applied to the Legion.
I’ve always loved the 512gb Deck screen. No reflection, can play in almost all situation. The glossy screens on the other hand are full of reflections. I’d go etched over glossy everytime. Good for using as mirrors though. I installed deckky for the odd game that was washed out - even then barely at 110-113.The bane of my life is my 60" tv (excellent blacks & picture) but this one is glossy & reflections from all angles makes it almost impossible to watch from certain places/angles because of windows making shades or curtains a must & be used, I enjoy sitting in a room soaking up some vitamin D especially during the winter.
If you want slower, prettier but with a non-fried microSD & cheapest option go Deck. If you want faster, biggest screen, 2 x USB, fps mouse mode & a working microSD then I’d go the Legion Go - but on the UK I’d advise waiting for the 1tb as the base standard for a Win 11 machine
If the Steam Deck was Windows I’d have said give it a go but it’s Linnux & I know I won’t be earning myself any favours saying this, you just can’t do on Linnux what you can on Windows (using the apps & tools you mention for instance)
Yes there’s productivity apps out there but they are NOT what companies, businesses & your school are using.
So decide for yourself, a laptop would be faster (depending on spec obvs) for playing the same games & it will do whatever you want or your school wants you to do.
You’ve finally sussed how to buy games! ALWAYS give a game a year - by then bugs are fixed, updates added, price has dropped dramatically & usually “complete” can be had for much less than half the original rip off release price.
You NEVER run out of latest AAA’s - your just a year behind the curve. I’ve been doing that since the PS3 days
