Ok hear me out.

Most people I have spoken to already had a large enough or even substantial Steam game library when they picked up a Deck.

For them, the Deck was a way to play their massive libraries on the go and for many, they are now completing more games than ever before.

However, for me, I’ve always been a console player. I picked up a Steam Deck last January and have slowly been building a library of games from absolute zero. I can’t get over the Steam sales and humble bundle offers - it’s night and day from my €80 PS5 games.

But, lately I’ve been thinking to myself, what would Cyberpunk, Final Fantasy or Resident Evil look like on a monster gaming laptop with the graphics pushed to the max?!

Has anyone else that’s new to Steam been in a similar position where the Deck was the gateway to a PC gaming journey in general?

Has anyone gone on to get a gaming desktop or laptop because of the Steam Deck or have you just been completely satisfied with the Deck?

Playing God of war on highest settings with a good hdr screen is really nice. There are worlds between SD or consoles in general. But tbh I had the biggest wow-effect playing Half life alyx on my quest 2 streaming everything from my pc so i could venture in the world of half life from my garden. That way I was totally immersed inside the game and had no boundarys like close walls etc. Really awesome :D

For me it made me go do my first ever pc build and so glad I did. Just use the steam deck and pc now to play games while my consoles collect dust. PC truly is the master race.

Gaming laptops are sort of an awkward middle ground these days. Desktops give you the freedom of build variety and going as powerful or as budget oriented as you want and are generally a better experience when compared to Laptop gaming on a desk. The fact that you can upgrade them every few years instead of the entire system becoming obsolete is also a pretty big plus.

Laptops are also not quite as comfortable to carry around as the Steam Deck is either. You can play the Steam Deck comfortably anywhere, and it isn’t as annoying to lug around as a whole laptop.

Gaming laptops have their place, but it’s a far more niche market now. For the people who just want to be able to game portably the Steam Deck just makes a better gaming device than a laptop.

The only people I can see that could benefit from a gaming laptop is someone that really wants to game and work on the same device they take to their job. Having a Steam Deck, I’d take the Desktop + SD over a gaming laptop 99/100 times

I’d always been a console guy, had ps2, xbox 360 and ps4 but I realised I’d have to change because my friends were now on PC and I didn’t really have anyone left on psn. Having built my own desktop, getting all the good deals and free games on epic with people to play with without a yearly subsciption I feel like I’ve been missing out on a lot for a long time.

I’d absolutely recommend a PC if you really like your gaming, it’ll open up a new world of game choice and options however I think most pc gamers myself included would recommend a desktop over a laptop. Thermals, upgradability, maintenance, self accomplishment after building it, list goes on.

I hear this! Been a console player since NES and never dipped my toes into PC gaming, but the steam deck has been en eye opener.

My only concern is how much would it cost to build a pc that’s as powerful as current gen consoles? I know nothing about PCs but would like to learn.

I’ve had the Lenovo Legion gaming laptop before SD. 95% of all my SD gaming sessions now are laying in bed, somewhere before sleeping, an hour or so. Maximum chill mode.

With a laptop it is also possible, but not as convenient.

Go desktop, my two cents if you’re already going to have the steamdeck for portability

I have a gaming laptop, a gaming pc and a steam deck now. For me the gaming laptop just felt impractical to carry around if I really wanted to do mobile gaming. I find myself hard to get immersed in big games while being mobile hence I bought the steam deck. If I want to experience AAA games I can play those when I have my gaming pc available.

I’ve literally had this exact thought, though I’d rather have a desktop. I’ve been looking at the Ace Magic mini PCs to save space and $$$, but I’m open to suggestions if anyone has them 😄 I’ve always been a Nintendo player and my husband sticks to X-box, so Steam was a whole new world to me.
