So ive wanted a steamdeck since they announced it but since then i have bought a high end pc. Now with the launch of the oled edition ive been thinking of actually buying one. But my question is, people who have high end pc’s, did you regret buying a steamdeck? Do you play totally different games or the same but for example on the couch? The only reason i would want to buy one is so i can lay on the couch in the evening and just relux instead of sitting at the desk but it just feels really unnecessary. Would love to hear your thoughts!
Different devices for different purposes. I take my deck to bed or to comfy chair when I’m sick of sitting behind desk.
No, i don’t regret it. I’m part of the few people that built a gaming PC just as a gaming box, I do all of my work on Linux and macOS. I mainly use my PC as a console for counterstrike, and mainly, when i got my Deck, streaming games in home to the deck in bed. Look into Moonlight, it’s fucking awesome.
not only did it NOT make me regret buying a steam deck, i went out and upgraded my pc’s CPU and GPU just for AV1 encoding to the deck lol, and upgrading to the steam deck OLED now still costs way less than buying an OLED monitor for my desk.
Did you notice any major difference using AV1 instead of HEVC?
Absolutely not. I play the high fidelity AAA games and flight sim on my 13600k/4080 rig and everything else on my SD.
I have not received my Oled 512gb but I can already safely say you will not be displeased if you are anything like me. I do a lot of emulation because modern games are not for me. Being able to play PS1/PS2, N64, BOTW and Gamecube stuff while in the comfort of my own bed is much much better than being at my desk. I have a backlog of games on Steam that I want to play but don’t feel like playing on my PC for whatever reason. Nier Automata and Bayonetta being the 2 major ones. For what little bit of modern games I play, the steam deck plays them well enough. I also want to tinker with Steam OS since I am a linux user already and I would like to see Valve’s take on things.
Yes, totally different games. Play graphically demand stuff or things I need to concentrate while playing on my desktop as well as old games that just feel like a bigger screen is needed.
Play relaxing or non demanding games on the deck in bed while my wife watches tv so we can spend time together.
Right now I’m playing the Megaman battle network part 1 on the deck, and usually have some Stardew valley type game on there (gonna buy spirit tea soon). But I fire the PC up to play Dragon Age, Cyberpunk or The Witcher 3, any racing game or fps. The deck can run a lot of those types but I don’t want to play them on it.
I see it as a complementary device for my PC. Ive got c2 48 oled + 6800xt setup for my 4K gaming and its absolutely glorious but i cant take my bigass setup with me anywhere or play just lying in bed. Thats where deck comes with a moonlight and also native portable gaming albeit with reduced graphics. But its perfectly fine, No regrets. Also waiting for delivery of new oled model to make it even better : )
I think i need to see it like that as well, running a 7700x with 7900xtx with two 2k 144hz screens but as you said, i cant play it in bed or somewhere else. Seeing where pretty much in the same situation it seems like a good purchase, thanks for your thoughts!
My PC isn’t quite high-end, but it’s still very decent - 5900X and 3070. I have found the Deck to be an excellent complement to the desktop. When I first got it I was using it almost exclusively, largely I think due to the novelty of being able to play my games anywhere instead of just at my desk or streaming to the TV via Steam Link. Eventually it settled into its niche - I can play most of my games on it if I want to play in bed, or when travelling, or whatever, but more demanding games where I want to appreciate the graphics, I play on the PC. Or sometimes I stream them from the PC to the Deck! I expect that use case will only get more common once my OLED Deck comes, as it’s a superior screen to my PC monitor, size and resolution notwithstanding.
13900K/4090 4k120Hz OLED/1440P 240Hz owner here… Also own a higher end Alienware laptop… they both became glorified work computers.
Those things took a backseat to my ROG Ally and Steamdeck only because it is convenient.
Hard to beat high fidelity gaming… But it also is hard to beat gaming that is easily available at decent fidelity almost anytime and anywhere.
This is me. Actually thinking about selling the Alienware X14. Deck has replaced it
I have a PC with a 13700k + 4080 with an Alienware 34 inch ultrawide OLED and a Steam Deck. I don’t regret the stem deck one bit and have ordered the OLED as well (especially since my old Deck is a bit broke now) . I work from home a lot and after work it’s often just so chill to not sit in the same office chair and lie down in the sofa or on the bed to game. I will generally play the most demanding games like Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2 on my main rig, but now with the OLED screen and with a wifi6 router I will look into streaming from the PC more.
Many games I see as basically Deck exclusive. There are so many cool indies and older games that are just perfect for the Steam Deck. Slay the spire, Monster Train, Triangle Strategy, Dredge, Persona 5 Vampire Survivors and so on… They just make sense handheld. Also for some reason Elden Ring was more gun, handheld I’ve felt even if performance is limited. But I love having the option and it’s so cool to play on the computer and seemlessly continue on the Deck. Midnight suns was for instance a game I played on both and it was great.
I would say my time is divided 50/50 and I couldn’t do without one or the other.
Have a very high end PC and nope no regrets. I mean Deck is for the times you aren’t or don’t want to be at your desk or home theater.
I’ve got a relatively fancy PC (Ryzen 9 5950X, Geforce 3080 RTX, connected to a 4k / 120 Hz TV) and don’t regret getting a Deck at all. It’s great for playing games when I’m at my desk, in bed, or traveling anywhere. If anything, having a high-end PC is a nice complement to it since I can stream high-end games from that for better battery life than I’d get if I was using the Deck alone.
Got a high End Laptop and ive ordered the OLED . Sometimes i wanna chill with the wife while she Watches netlix or genrally game in the absence of a table.
If you enjoy older titles, i would recommend it. Iam planning to Play the Mass Effect series for example. And maybe a third time Metro Exodus.
My desktop is a R7 5800X / RTX 4080. I use it more than my cheap 64GB Steam deck I upgraded to 1TB, but I still like my Steam Deck. I also have a R9 5900HS / RTX 3070 laptop I used to use for gaming while on the go. I barely use the laptop for gaming now, and the Deck has more or less replaced it except when I need to work remotely.
I decided I will sell my LCD Deck to buy the OLED Deck, as the battery life improvement alone is a big deal. The screen never bothered me, but an improved screen is appreciated. The Bluetooth improvement is also important to me since I use headphones, and lower latency will help. I bought a 512GB model I will just upgrade to 1TB again.
Since you have a high end PC you can always use the Steam Deck as a streaming device by using moonlight and sunshine. That’s my intent for games that don’t run natively on the Steam Deck. I also want to take my Steam Deck to work for my lunch break so having games that can run on it helps to.
