hi so i’m sorry if this is an obvious question but i keep trying to find answers on it and i just keep finding answers that don’t entirely answer what i wanna know or conflict with what i thought so i’m turning here

my initial thought when i heard of the steam deck was that it was a very costly console but purchasing it gave you a large portion of steam’s library for free, but now i’m not sure and i’m thinking about getting a steam deck for christmas because there are a lot of steam games i’m becoming interested in. so i’d like to finally get an answer to this before i commit. do you download the games for free on steam deck or do you still have to purchase them?? again i’m sorry for the dumb question, but thanks in advance

Over 50,000 games are available on Steam in the US. I can’t even imagine the thinking that because someone buys a Steam Deck that Valve is going to give away a large portion of those 50,000 games for free.

The only “free” games are the ones you have already purchased or free2play. You have to pay for any and all new games unless the go on sale for free.

No, you still have to purchase the games, of course. They’re not going to be giving you games for free. But games can frequently be purchased for steep discounts, and it runs Steam, so if you already have many games in your Steam library already, you can play any of those games you’ve already purchased from Steam on your Steam Deck.

The Steam Deck is an extension of your Steam Account. Not a separate console. it’s another computer but in handheld console form. Consoles have ruined that aspect imo and is primarily why I went to PC gaming in 2013. I was tired of having a Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S and not having any backwards compatibility for the games I wanted to play. Any games you purchase inside Steam will work (for free - no repurchase needed) on any device you log into provided the specs of that device meet the requirements for the game you want to play.

I mean Xbox did have a backwards compatibility program that brought in a lot of 360 and og Xbox titles but yeah nowhere near the amount that you’d get from just having a gaming pc.

While there are some free games available on steam (just like any console’s store page) the majority of them still cost money.

You will get one free game with your steam deck, and that’s apature desk job. It’s basically a tech demo.

You get the same games you get on your pc steam account. So whatever you bought on that. Otherwise its like any other console and you buy the games.

No, you will have access to whatever games you already own on steam.

Steam sales are where the value comes from and a lot of games are discounted right now for black Friday sales, so if you are going to get a steam deck you should get on there and start building your library.

I think maybe you got confused by the fact that you can download games you already own on Steam but some just don’t work on the Steam Deck or don’t run well because the Deck is not powerful enough. Buying a Steam Deck doesn’t give you any games for free as part of the purchase.

u/friendlydragonfly706 where did you hear or get the idea that buying a steam deck would get you free games to play on it?
