First week of the Portal was pretty bad. Stutters, connection issues, nearly sent it back.
Did a bit of tweaking, hardwired the TV in, removed one mesh box that wasn’t even needed, restarted the Portal, and now it’s the best handheld I’ve ever had.
OLED Deck does look gorgeous - and I actually prefer the analogue stick positions on Deck - but the Portal’s screen is absolute perfect size. I can’t believe how much better it is for handheld gaming. I can also read every bit of text, no matter how small.
The biggest thing? I can play my entire backlog of PS5 games (all digital) in 1080p, flawlessly.
With the Deck, I’ve re-bought so many games I already own on PS5, only to get frustrated at how small the screen is. Cyberpunk wasn’t easy going from 55” OLED TV to the Deck lcd.
The Portal feels natural in screen size.
I am a bit gutted because I might end up selling the Deck but I’m leaning towards just keeping it at the desk as a little PC connected to the monitor for the odd RTS game, etc.
I know this is a negative post but it’s just a story worth sharing. I’m also jealous of any OLED Deck owners! You do have the better device right there.
A “portable” device that needs a PS5 and an online connection to function vs. a handheld computer that can play most Steam games and can also be an excellent emulator. I’m not sure I agree with you bud.
And my Deck was only used at home over WiFi. EXACTLY the same 😂
PS5 is always in rest mode. Works flawlessly.
Just downloaded Bloodborne and RDR2, they are a joy to play on Portal. I’m blown away. Free - already owned - games, too.
wonder how many actually think this way for real, trade in the ability to play nearly anything on any platform, for the ability to only play ps5 titles remotely, sounds like… er, a bargain?
K
Now get a OLED Samsung Tablet. You have WiFi 6 which is better than Portal WiFi. Better OLED screen. Access to PSPlay which is better than official PS Remote app, and moonlight as well for PC streaming
It’s awesome that everyone can find a handheld solution that works for them. A few years ago there was basically zero choice.
LOL
Deck + Chiaki > Portal imho. But hey - so long as you’re happy. I’m not here to tell you what you should do.
K, nice to have known you, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
So Sad I don’t live nextontonyou, I could buy your deck haha!
You know you can just remote play on the Deck, right?
With the smaller screen he specifically didn’t like…
You could have played your entire ps5 backlog on the deck, streaming it just like you are to the portal. But you paid $200 for a controller to do it :p
Sounds like you aren’t used to PC gaming. GUI issues are often a simple fix and even games like Cyberpunk and God of War had issues on PS5 with text scaling at launch. I can’t imagine a little more than a half-inch would make so much of a difference that I’d give up the extra features of a Deck.
That said, nothing can change the ecosystem you built up. I chose to build my Steam library back in 2010 because I can always upgrade my pc, but games aren’t guaranteed to work on next gen consoles and I didn’t want to buy multiple copies. If you are in the PlayStation ecosystem, the Deck is going to be more costly to natively run games.
In the end, you do you. Enjoy what you enjoy and no one else should change it. But, I wouldn’t expect a Steam Deck based community to not defend the Deck. It’s like going to r/PS5 and talking about how the Series X turned you off of the PS5. A PS5 community might have more kindred spirits for you.
PS fanboys really will do anything to justify that freakin thing 😂😂
Sony games haven’t been good for so long too;(. Spider-Man 2 was cheeks.
Years ago I might have fought you on this, but I’ve started to realize with some reflection that first party Sony titles are almost all universally experiences you primarily watch rather than play. Sure, you make inputs and control characters and actions and… whatever… but in reality the game play of most is just universally thin and you are meant to enjoy the spectacle rather than the mechanics. Like playing a “choose your own adventure” movie with big names and big explosions.
