lol, Nvidia could charge any amount and there would be people rushing to buy it just to claim they have the best card. You have to know how much you’re willing to spend and just get whatever matches your budget. For people with no budget, they can get the X090 cards.

I honestly even don’t care. Make the 5090 Ti cost $10,000. If some whales want to spend that much, more power to them.

Just don’t fuck with the rest of the stack and offer a reasonable 5060 type of card with a useful amount of memory so people don’t have to reverse mortgage their houses to play GTA6.

I think people forget that the XX90 is supposed to fit a similar niche as the Titan series. It’s a luxury product to suck as much money as possible from whales, it’s okay that it’s expensive. The XX80 though, that needs to be far more realistic.

All those who justified the price hike when 4090 first launched must be cumming so hard. For every cent prices are increased, it must be like ecstasy to them.

We could try looking at other 4090 models, but there’s another disturbing trend: Most of the 4090 cards are starting to go out of stock. Is that because demand has increased? It’s possible but unlikely. More probably is that the supply has dried up, either because it became too expensive to manufacture, or because something else is coming down the pipeline.

either because it became too expensive to manufacture, or because something else is coming down the pipeline.

It’s neither of these. I know the 4090 FE was being produced by Foxconn in China because their stamp along with the customs stamp were on the box when I bought it from Best Buy (it came in the shipping packaging direct from Foxconn factory still intact with the retail packaging inside that).

This ban also means no more making the cards in China too since the chips can’t be shipped there, so that’s absolutely going to fuck with production for a time as they need to find a new location to assemble the cards and get all those logistics in place. Maybe some of the AIB cards weren’t being assembled in China, but I doubt it.

People have too much money to spend, and this is evidence of it. This card shouldn’t really exist, it should have been the titan, and it should have been a more prosumer focused card for those who actually need 24GB VRAM. But by marketing it as a the flagship consumer card, it makes people feel inadequate if they have anything less.

it should have been the titan

It’s nowhere near the full AD102 die though, “just” 88.8% of the cuda cores less than the past x80Ti:s while in the past Titans were the full die. And the L2 cache that’s there to offset/help the “low” memory bandwidth is cut quite a bit as well vs the full die.

Anyways naming aside as that can be argued both ways many times, the reason ppl are buying it because nvidia made the 4080 pricing way too high relatively, not wanting a repeat of the 3080 10GB vs everything above it maybe, so it’s just there to upsell you on the 4090 as it is now “better value” so to speak. Remember they were originally gonna call the 4070ti the “4080 12GB” for $900 to upsell it even more.

The 4090 isn’t a full die because the pro cards based on the AD102 are selling 100x more than they were in the past. It’s still absolutely huge for a consumer card.

Most likely scenario is that everyone in a blacklisted country is buying them up as quickly as they can get them before the new export ban goes into place. Once that happens and essentially 25% of the buyers market goes away, I would be surprised if prices didn’t go back down.

I keep seeing people saying this and while it would make sense at first glance do remember that Nvidia is very much aware that a big chunk of their market will be gone soon, and they’ve known for a while (way before us randos learned about it). If Nvidia appropriately managed their production in anticipation of this they can keep prices higher for a while. Not forever, but at least until early next year. You can also be sure they won’t let the prices do down even a dollar below MSRP until the Super series is out. Can’t have a “cheap” 4090 make their 4080 Super look worse.

That very well could be the case. Nvidia is well known to manipulate supply to artificially keep prices high. Look at how hard they fought to try and keep Covid pricing. It could happen, but I think it’s more likely that it’ll go down than not since there was a buying frenzy for blacklisted countries.

And where do you think the cards will get built ? I’m not really aware of almost any large scale place that makes video cards outside of China currently.

Unless something gets spun up quick I foresee some shortages, and possibly quality issues while the new factories figure shit out.

Taiwan doesn’t really have much large scale general electronics manufacturing on the scale of China. And a lot companies that used to manufacture there use China now.

That’s a good point, and will disrupt supply in the short term. However Nvidia has a LOT of manufacturers all over the world. Tooling up for more GPU production takes months, not years. The hard part is the processor. Nvidia has had a lot of time to prepare for this. I would be surprised if they weren’t already able to plug any supply gaps.

You realize that the dies are exported to china, assembled on a card and then exported to the rest of the world right? Taiwanese companies have moved all of their production to China. There is not much left in Taiwan. Only Gigabyte has some left.

4090 is going to have low supply for the remaining of this cycle and it’s not going to be better for 5090. The cost it takes to move back the production to Taiwan, for a consumer card is too high. Sure they will assemble H100s and up in Taiwan no problem. Not a consumer grade card. The price will be passed on to the consumer.

Installed World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King server-edition. Now I can enjoy that 120+ FPS on 1440p. Lul.

AMD doesn’t offer anything at any price point. They just have inferior, drivers and technology. You’re never gonna catch or beat Nvidia being the value card and losing every time.
