    It probably won’t take much to Apple to create their own search engine and send everybody there instead. They need a big incentive for not doing that.

      If it wasn’t Google, they would take Microsoft money. I don’t think they want to do their own search engine. I think they might even put DuckDuckGo as their main engine before making a new one.

    I wonder if this deal ended, what percentage of people would just automatically choose Google as a search engine anyway?

    People talk about an Apple search engine, that’s probably more likely if this deal ends but I still feel the vast majority of normal like using google and want to continue to use it no matter what.

    Apple talks a big game on privacy. But takes money from Google and sends iPhone users search query to Google.

      If you’re a Google competitor, you now know what number you need to offer Apple in order to start the conversation about switching safari’s default browser.

      If you’re a consumer… I have no idea why you’d care. Especially when you can freely choose another search engine if you feel so inclined.

    This deal will likely be the end of Google. Apple gets the rev share, then takes that money and reinvests that money back into its product which in turn causes more people to leave Android for Apple which in turn means Google has to pay more money in total to Apple and the process repeats. This is bad for Google for two reasons. 1/ Rev share to preinstall Google search is much lower on Android devices than Apple. So their cost goes up. 2/ Google loses more power to have Google preinstaled. (It’s easier to have Android OEMs preinstall Google search).

    Ultimately I feel as if this RSA deal will be the end of Google because as Apple is taking more share, I think Apple will have a lot of negotiating room to get a higher rate in the future. If for example, in the US 87% of the population uses an iPhone, Apple threatening its own search engines will cause Google to raise rates. (Note in the US, 87% of teenagers have an iPhone so if that trend hold constant, I could for sure Apple having 87% market share). Literally Apple is becoming the gate keeper to HVUs.

    Yeah you can say Android has 1B users etc but those users hardly monetize for Google search. IMO it’s better to have the HVUs and Apple is increasingly having those users on lock.

      Similar but slower trend for macs too. The turnover of new Laptops is much slower, so the revenue is not as huge as iPhone revenue, but the amount of people with Currently using MacBooks is gigantic and growing.

      This deal isn’t new. Google has been paying apple this for a while and has been doing very well. Big G ain’t worried about

      lol the headline is misleading, they pay 36% of the revenue from data gathered from safari. not all of alphabet/googles revenue not even all of their ad revenue.

      I’m sure Google cares far more about search than they do about Android. Search is their bread and butter and where they’ve made the bulk of their fortune.

        The whole reason Google got into Android was to secure the distribution of Google search. By controlling Android, Google was able to have more control over OEMs to preinstall Google search as the exclusive default

    All these pay offs are reducing the incentive from companies like apple to compete with google in any meaningful way. It’s not a win-win situation people, it’s supporting to keep the oligopoly from Google where it is.

        Nope. Apple gets their standard 30% cut of any business that happens on their products (which has its own antitrust case because it’s nearly textbook monopoly rent seeking), and Google gets to simply pay a 30% cut to not really have to compete, which is also anticompetitive monopoly behavior.

        I didn’t originally think this case had legs, but the nonstop barrage of blatant evidence has me thinking the FTC might actually get a win here.

          1. This article and post has nothing to do with the App store “monopoly”.

          2. Google paying to the default is not anti-competitive in any way. It’s a very typical deal brand. For example: Goodyear pays to be the tire of Nascar or Nathan’s pays to be the hotdog of the MLB. Google is just paying to be the search engine of Apple.

          Hell, I’d even take it further argue what Google is even more obviously not anti-competitive because a user can straight up change their search engine, but you can’t to to a MLB game and find a Ballpark hotdog vendor.
