Looking into it and realising I have no intention of upgrading to the OLED, it’s made me question what it would take for me to trade in my OG deck for an upgrade.

The big 3 for me would be Freesync, 90hz refresh rate (with VRR for lower speeds, 30, 60 and 90 would be a dream) and USB4 with eGPU support.

What about you guys?

Honestly. The oled is exactly what I wanted. A Deck with a good screen and battery life. I will actually skip on tte Steam Deck 2 because of it, and just wait for the revision.

For me the deck sits in the same camp as my PC, if something breaks and it’s no longer operational it’ll upgrade. If it’s suddenly struggling to run the majority of what I want to play, I’ll upgrade.

It’s really not that big of an update, I’m surprised people are really considering spending another £500 for just a screen and some battery/efficiency changes.

At least 2x the current chip Performance but would prefer x3 or x4 even.

I couldn’t care less if everything else remained the same, because i think it’s a rock solid device.

I absolutely would not want a screen with a higher resolution, as it’d kill performance and look like a blurry mess if you were to target lower resolutions (e.G. 720p on a 1080p display).

And since we’re talking a new chip:

FSR3 compatibility is an absolute must along with OS-Wide AFMF support (think FSR 1.0 on Deck).

Now that’s a device that would be solid for a very long time to come.

the screen is enough. better battery is a welcome plus, the few grams less on the oled are also better for my wrist. i think this is enough for me, because if i ever need to play a big game i just stream it from my pc or xcloud, if i’m on the go i’ll usually pick a smaller game or emulated game for battery. God of war 2 at 60fps 1080p can run for 7h50min on the oled, which is incredible

If they had a trade-in program, I would upgrade it. For now, steam deck + xreal glasses is the way to go, I don’t have to use the small low-quality LCD screen

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t even go for a generational upgrade. I don’t really play many games that push the Deck to its limit, and I almost never get AAA titles anywhere near release, if at all.

If and when my Steam Deck starts to feel like it’s in need of an upgrade, then I’ll upgrade. My last handheld PC lasted from 2017-2022. I even still have it, though the Deck has obviously displaced it.

The only real complaints I have at the moment are the bezels on the screen and battery life and even then, I’ve gotten used to playing while plugged in. IOW I’m pretty happy and it’d take something drastic like theft or age to want to upgrade.

For me it’s the bigger screen with higher res. The current OLED upgrade still has wasted black borders albeit smaller compared to original but its still there. i believe they can push their upgrade with the original steamdeck body with a fully bezel less screen and go at least 8" than just 7.4" because of those damn black borders

    Better hardware.
the deck struggles too much to play current gen games without signifigamt sacrifices to visual fidelity

an oled panel can’t make sub 800p upscaling look so much better that it matters to me

Bigger performance upgrade. This form factor is going to improve a lot over the years. This really isn’t one of the big ones. Although OLED is really nice.

More power, and at the same price as the 64GB model was at launch.

The OLED seems great, and I really want it, but it’s just too much money, especially when my current Deck works just fine. I know I’d feel buyer’s remorse if I go and spend all of that money on it, and ultimately, it’s the same device that I’ve already got.

I would also seriously consider buying a Deck mini if it had all of the features of the OLED but at a pocketable size. It would be nice to be able to keep playing all of the same games in situations where it isn’t really socially acceptable to whip out a massive device from my bag.

For the moment, though, I’m waiting to see what Nintendo are doing. I know I’d feel shitty if I spent hundreds on a slightly revised version of something I already have only for them to announce their next console months later.
