I would. Heck on my GF’s PC I just upgraded her from 8th to 12th gen. Skipping LGA 1200 entirely. On my HTPC it’s 8th gen also, and I’m gonna wait for 15th gen and decide what to do with it then might go a budget end of life LGA 1700, an AM4, or 5 setup.

On my personal PC I had an r5 1600, now a 3700x, and I’m thinking I’m gonna get a 5800x3d and then skip AM5, and get whatever the first gen on AM6 or the Intel equivalent at that time. Unless something before then really compels me. Then I’ll have had a motherboard last almost 10 years from 2016 to 2026ish, and hopefully can repeat that again with AM6.

The 5800x3d just seems like a great hold over until then, unless the CPU wars speed up again.

It was actually released in 2016. And it’s currently tied with LGA 775 for longest support window. And if it actually gets the 5500x3d and/or the 5700x3d or these GT chips next year? It’ll actually be the longest supported socket ever unless im mistaken.

AM4 actually had chips before Ryzen with old Bristol ridge apus. Which released in 2016 before Ryzen came along in 2017.

So in theory you could go from an old Bristol Ridge steamroller based chip all the way to an r7 5800x3d on one motherboard in theory…

Eh this isn’t some and only thing… Intels Pentium and Celeron lines are now their bottom barrel chips too. And i7s used to be their top tier outside of the server market? Now they have i9s…

Sometimes just to really say how much better the new components are? They gotta give them a new name, and thus push down their old brand.

And AMD has also kinda neglected their tiers below R5 in general. We don’t even have Zen 3 or 4 Ryzen 3s yet. And honestly it kinda seems like AMD has mostly just decided they’d rather price cut prior generation parts than make lower end chips example being they made the R5 1600 “AF” for $80 rather than making an Athlon or Ryzen 3 chip for a while there. And then when they did make the Ryzen 3 3100/3300? They were basically paper launched compared to the 1600 AFs.

I mean they kept making cpus after their near bankruptcy from Bulldozer… Odds are they’ll just quit making top tier gpus which wouldn’t be a first for them at all. The 480/580 were mainstream class cards with no top tier above them. And then there was Vega 56, 64, and 7… The 7 was their attempt at a top tier. Then they went with 5700xt again a mid tier card with no top tier.

Really wouldn’t be weird for AMD to just say “can’t match a 5090 so we’re not gonna try” while they work on future cards. Until they think they can give it a shot again.
