    Much less even.

The top LCD model goes for less than €400 on the second hand market. Which is logical, since Steam’s own refurbished top LCD model can be gotten for €379. If I were buying an LCD, I’d really want my second hand version to be about 50 to 100 euros less and it looks like second hand buyers know that.

I would certainly like to upgrade but by selling my LCD deck, I would be devaluing it extremely, since I won’t be getting much in resale value on the second hand market. I’d basically throw away 300 euros for simply using it a couple of months.

I’m hoping the resale value of the premium LCD deck rises again after Valve’s stock runs out and the second hand market calms down. Maybe that will happen, maybe not.

  • So many reasons NOT to upgrade, especially if you recently bought a Deck.

    1. The second-hand market is being flooded with Steam Decks. So you won’t get much resale value at all for financing the OLED upgrade.
Prices are already dropping like crazy. Some people still hope to sell their 512GB etched glass decks for 450 euros on local marketplaces here in NL, while Valve’s own price drop already sells the same device for 470, new. It’s likely the second-hand product won’t be worth more than 350 euros from now on, so already about half of its retail price from just a month ago.
    2. Really, the LCD screen might not be great, but it’s bright and works for most games on the Deck. The only ones that aren’t great are dark horror games in my experience, as they always tended to shade purple in scenes that are dimly lit.
    3. Performance is mostly the same.
    4. Storage was never an issue. unless you got a 64GB Deck.
    5. All the OS upgrades and improvements still continue on the first gen.

Basically, until two days ago, a first gen Deck was considered money well spent. It’s a loss of investment if you walk away from that.

The only upgrade path I think is logical, is for people who got the Deck 18 months ago and already enjoyed their playtime (and investment). That still doesn’t change the fact that their current LCD Deck still works fine of course.
