Yes I get that it kind of sucks having just bought one and then a new one gets announced but some people are in a panic now. Your Deck is not obsolete. It is still the best handheld pc you can buy right now. Enjoy it.

So many reasons NOT to upgrade, especially if you recently bought a Deck.

    1. The second-hand market is being flooded with Steam Decks. So you won’t get much resale value at all for financing the OLED upgrade.
Prices are already dropping like crazy. Some people still hope to sell their 512GB etched glass decks for 450 euros on local marketplaces here in NL, while Valve’s own price drop already sells the same device for 470, new. It’s likely the second-hand product won’t be worth more than 350 euros from now on, so already about half of its retail price from just a month ago.
    2. Really, the LCD screen might not be great, but it’s bright and works for most games on the Deck. The only ones that aren’t great are dark horror games in my experience, as they always tended to shade purple in scenes that are dimly lit.
    3. Performance is mostly the same.
    4. Storage was never an issue. unless you got a 64GB Deck.
    5. All the OS upgrades and improvements still continue on the first gen.

Basically, until two days ago, a first gen Deck was considered money well spent. It’s a loss of investment if you walk away from that.

The only upgrade path I think is logical, is for people who got the Deck 18 months ago and already enjoyed their playtime (and investment). That still doesn’t change the fact that their current LCD Deck still works fine of course.

I’m selling my 512GB, received in August 2022.

Yes the value is around 350 EUR, but the upgrade will be what, 170 EUR? Seems palatable.

I find the LCD is good in indoor, controlled lighting, but the brightness lets it down outdoors - this is 50% more SDR brightness.

I wouldn’t advocate buying a new one without some way of recouping the costs from sale of the original.

Ah, so you’re not going for the etched glass OLED version? Might just be the kind of thing that you would want outdoors, right?

On reflection, I’d likely get 320 EUR not 350 - ehhhh, thinking about it.

I’d go for the glossy - can use a screen protector and it can be a matte protector if needed. 600 nits of SDR brightness vs 400 should bring a sizeable jump in usability.

I’m still weighing this up in my head though, since the deck OG is great - just that OLED is so nice to look at.

I got mine last year and still love the thing to death. Does the OLED tempt me? Of course, but I also know that selling my current Deck at a loss would hurt. Like you said, I’ve already seen a ton of listings go up for the LCD model on eBay and the like.

SteamOS 3.5 will be launching at some point and will come with color options so that should be interesting. I know you can get it through the beta channel, but I prefer to wait for the stable release personally. The LCD is still a great device that can get great mileage until the SD2.

I’d love a trade in like others, yet it most likely won’t happen.

I fall almost exactly into the 18 month category. I already have logged close to 300 hrs on the deck and play mostly handheld mode so the OLED with the upgrades makes sense. Even if i have to sell the deck for $300-350, its worth it to me. I’m honestly surprised the one detail most people haven’t even brought up at all is that it will have threaded screw holes for the chassis. That’s huge compared to the self tapping screws we have now. I love my deck, but I have the spare cash combined with whatever i sell it for, so I’m probably gonna hop on board. I have loved what I’ve gotten out of it and am happy to make someone else happy while upgrading for cheaper than I would otherwise.
