I’d say wait for the Steam Deck 2. It’s only 2-3 years away max and this is a good upgrade but only really good for anyone who doesn’t have a Deck yet or needs an upgrade because theirs is broken or something

It’s okay, DeckHD is a marginal product at best. Resolutions above 800p on a handheld are pointless. They were never going to sell many.

I know tech is expected to advance, but this almost seems like a slap in the face to the people who invested in the first Deck to release such an upgraded model so soon after launch. I feel like they should offer some sort of discount on the newer models if you purchased the first one and want to buy the new version to upgrade.

New, better, faster PCs and components are constantly released. New laptop models, even from the same manufacturer, come out every year.

Just buy the thing you want when you can buy it. Constantly feeling like you need to have the newest and best is a losing battle.

Dude. It’s been over 2 years and it’s a modest refresh addressing the biggest complaints. Are they just supposed to not make improvements so they don’t hurt your feelings?

It is kind of a slap on the face, I agree. I personally will probably be skipping buying a new deck, as I find the screen “good enough” to play with.

But at the same time, releasing an OLED version with a bigger battery to boot should fix the two biggest criticisms of the Steam Deck.

I feel like they can still make their salepoint with the higer resolution, OLED deck is still 800p, and deckhd is 1200p, so existing steam deck users that want a better screen might be into it. I’m thinking about it myself.

It does once you realise that you have the option of selling your current Deck and upgrading to the OLED for roughly the same price and none of the risk or downsides of DeckHD (custom BIOS requirement, lower brightness).

Who would buy a used Steam Deck with screen modifications for about the same price as a new OLED with all of the security of being from Valve…?

I’m talking about people with an LCD Deck who haven’t modified their screen. I’m seeing used 512gb Deck’s going for ~£350 on eBay (I expect that will fall somewhat). That plus $99 (not inc. shipping) for the DeckHD is pretty close to the same price as a brand new 512GB Deck OLED (£479).

What hurts more is not that they just got owned from the announcement. Everything offered on the OLED edition are much better than DECKHD LOL.

Anybody buying the DeckHD screen was a moron anyway. The HD screen is not worth the massive performance hit.

There is no performance hit unless you are playing in 1200p. I got it for the higher pixel density, better color range and proper integer scaling, I never planned to run games at 1200p.

ngl i hate that everyone is seemingly laughing at DeckHD for this. people willing to take the risk to offer us upgrades like they did should be commended and lauded, not laughed at when they, through no fault of their own, get screwed. we need more specialized stuff for the Deck, not less.

The people taking the risk with DeckHD are the ones who try to install them. Difficult Installation, Custom Bios (Does it require DeckHD existing for support long term?), and its a resolution that the Deck isn’t targeting. I’m going to stop short of calling it a bad product, charitably its an enthusiast product.

Ultimately DeckHD is not completely SoL, the base model is still going to have the LCD screen, so there will be plenty more new LCD models that some people may turn to DeckHD for.

Custom Bios (Does it require DeckHD existing for support long term?)

Yeah that is probably the big isssue. The chance that DeckHD will not be profitable and discontinued is now pretty high and if they stop releasing bioses after that you are kind of fucked.

This is the internet. On the internet (and reddit especially) people like to make light and laugh at other people when things go wrong for them. It makes them feel better about all the deficiencies in their own dismal lives.

DeckHD was a terrible idea from the offset. “No fault of their own” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Good ideas should be lauded. Awful, stupid ones should not. In this case a very good thing came of it.

Wouldn’t this still be a great option for people that currently have a steam deck, but wouldn’t want to buy a whole new deck to get the OLED?

I appreciate them offering a product but I don’t think the DeckHD was worth it even before the OLED announcement. It’s too much money and risk for not enough return.
