Think about it, only SteamOS 3.5 and above have HDR support and some features like the unified framerate limit the Steam Deck OLED is rocking.

Valve wouldn’t release this new console without having those features shipped to stable.

    Hope they’re gonna fix the 200/1040mhz GPU snapping bug currently present in 3.5 before it hits stable, or a lot of people will be unpleasantly surprised when their games suddenly perform worse than before.

        That was a different one, where GPU clock speed was permanently stuck at 200mhz for some people. In 3.5 they introduce a bug where the GPU clock would constantly ping pong between 400 and 1040mhz. Causes games like Signals and Viewfinder to play at 45fps where they run at 60fps in 3.4.

          Holy crap. That sucks. Is it related to setting the manual GPU speed in one game and launching another? Here on 3.4, I actually experienced the 200mhz bug after setting the manual speed in one game, it caused others to have 200hmz (oddly enough the manually set GPU speed in the one game was kept in that one specific game, but at the expense of all others).

          Or is this an issue that happens to everyone on 3.5.1 no matter what?

    I have disagreed with most attempts to read the tea leaves of 3.5.x development based on past releases, but this is the first "3.5 soon’ argument that’s convincing.

    Counterpoint: I’m surprised they didn’t announce it yesterday, because it would have been a salve for annoyed SD-LCD owners, to know they’re at least getting something. (I don’t consider myself an annoyed owner, but I can’t pretend I didn’t see a lot of them in the comments yesterday.)

    This new steamdeck is first of all a proof of success of the OG steamdeck sales. Even Valve would not support and upgrade unsuccessful products, pouring money into marketing and stuff.

    So while I fully expect that overall sales are nowhere near even the Xbox, not to mention Switch/Sony, Valve is still confident that the market is there for them, and I can’t be happier to see this.

      Valve very much WOULD support and upgrade an unsuccessful product. Just look at the Steam Controller and Steam Link. Both products are still supported, and went through a number of small production interactions. Neither were successful by any stretch of the imagination.

        Steam controller and steam link weren’t unsuccessful though lol. Thanks to the steam controller we now have steam input, and thanks to the link we now have steam streaming. You could also argue that we can thank the SC for the Deck existing at all. Success isn’t just number of units shipped (and even if it was the SC still sold very well compared to any other third party controller)

          I also imported one. Worth it. I’m not upgrading to the OLED though, it’s not enough of a jump to sink that amount of money again, and I’m really happy with my 1TB LCD.

        I’ve already sold mine! CEX in the UK was offering vaguely reasonable amounts for them and I wanted to get in there before they catch on to the new models and adjusted prices - they’re offering £385 in vouchers or £319 cash for a good condition 512GB, and selling them for £550, which I can’t see lasting now that the original 512 is selling for £389 and the OLED 512 is £479.

        Of course they did keep selling them for over £700 for a while after Valve ditched the reservations, so who knows what they’ll do! As long as they don’t start offering more for some reason. It is going to suck being without a Deck for at least 2 weeks though!

      Just remove it from the downloads tab on desktop mode in steam settings.

      If you don’t play any AAA games on Steam Deck that are as heavy as Dead Space, then it’s not too much a difference without them. Also make sure to delete the cache folder afterwards too.

      I’ve been playing without shader caches for a few months and it’s really just AAA way too heavy games that truly need them. Otherwise your loading screens might be a little bit longer.

      But for the likes of Dead Space remake. You NEED them or it will crash hard and only from walking a few steps.

        Should still be an option to delete in gaming mode like the decky plugin does. And so many of my games will stutter without them. The craziest one: Phasmophobia has the largest shader cache I’ve seen, at over 6 gigs. I think the whole game is like 20 gigs?

      I think we are not gonna get it since they said practically nothing and the update is on 3.5.2 at beta iirc, they sell machines with more storage so people wouldn’t complain

        The new Mesa feature would enable Valve to shrink the shader cache packages. Enabled doesn’t mean done, it just means they can start. So I agree with you that our caches aren’t gonna magically shrink the day 3.5.x comes out, but that doesn’t mean they won’t in the near future.

        My guess is that once 3.5 is out of its initial release window, Valve will start rebuilding the packages to take advantage of the pipeline feature, starting with the most-played games first. We’ll get a blog post (or a bullet point within one) telling us that we’ll see our caches shrink over time, but I doubt there’ll be a big-bang deployment of smaller packages.

    I think you’re right. Obviously none of us can predict the future, but I was having this same thought earlier today. If I were a gambler I’d bet it goes to stable next week.
