I have a current Steam Deck and briefly considered the OLED, I got an OLED switch and OLED is really nice but at that price why not just spend the same to a little more and get a much more powerful handheld that doesn’t have the same restrictions as using a Steam Deck, such as many games and a lot of the most popular online games not working at all due to the anti-cheat? With the other handhelds you can install steam and run any game that you can run on windows without worry (unless KBM is required then can’t run in handheld mode) as well as easily install other launchers if needed.

Am I missing something that makes this the wrong thought process? Is there something about the other handhelds that although much higher stats and performance that makes them a lesser choice over the Steam Deck?

No, it is a very nice offering but my main use case of handhelds turns out to be gaming while being more social towards the family, i.e., couch gaming. And I find that I end up playing the more demanding AA+ games so I need a significant jump in processing power to consider an upgrade.

Some of the more powerful handhelds are missing OLED/touch pads/back buttons/gyro, and don’t have SteamOS (yet).

    It’s all pretty much subjective.

Nah, still happy with my 512 ‘LCD’. If anything I’d get the Legion Go, not a sidegrade to a slightly better Deck.

Dual trackpads, SteamOS, and the plethora of tutorials to get games to work are why I’ll still get the OLED Deck when I get the chance. My backlog of games also involves older games that probably are easier to run on Linux then they are on a modern Windows OS.

I also really really want the OLED because I usually play in a low-light environment with the screen on the lowest brightness.

Going to get oled deck, but the screen is not the main selling point for me. Getting 3 hours of playtime in AAA games is pretty sweet. Other handhelds are not that powerful and their battery life is laughable when they use their power.

I got my Deck in January and I love it. I’ll admit that when other handhelds like the Ally and most recently the Legion Go came out I’ve been tempted to get them, but I can’t justify it as yes, they may be a bit more powerful, but that boost in performance just isn’t worth spending all that extra money. I feel much the same way with the OLED.

If I didn’t have a deck already I might get the OLED Deck, but then again the $800 2TB (only at Microcenter) Legion Go is also very attractive.

No, not affordable for me, i’ll save some money and wait 2 years, if deck 2 offer better performances with similar features to “deck+” the i’ll pull the trigger. But at this moment, i’ve spend 500€ for deck with the device, 1TB PM991a SSD and the dock. The deck is already a bit weak for last AAA games, so why putting that much for the same limitations?

None of the other Windows handhelds have OLED, and Windows is as much a bane as it is a boon.

Also, battery life. 50% greater battery life like Valve’s claiming for the OLED is a big deal in a handheld gaming device.

And the Z1E chips the other two use generally sacrifice battery life even harder to get their vaunted performance. And for me personally, their performance isn’t good enough to justify the cost bump. If I still have to play RDR2 with everything on low at 720p and still can’t reach 60fps, am I really gaining anything?

I feel like I wouldn’t recommend upgrading to the OLED if you own one unless theres issues you have that the new model fixes. For me the improved Bluetooth and WiFi is huge as I have a Bluetooth headset on 70% of the day for podcasts gaming and other things. In general this is the most tempting refeesh I’ve seen from any tech company in a 5+ years. I think the way valve put it was “this is the definitive edition” and that’s the perfect phrasing. It’s the same thing with a ton of tweaks and improvements. Most people pick the deck for it’s guaranteed support that all the other handhelds lack. You just can’t beat the track record they’ve given this community the last two years.

No either they offer a trade in to buy the OLED and return the LED version or I will just wait for the Deck 2

I’m getting one but for me it’s going to be a big change anyway because I got the 64gb model which I am selling. I’ll probably get the 1TB model and it’s not just the screen they’ve changed which now has a 90 hz refresh rate. It’s a complete refresh. Better chip, better cooling system and quieter fan, bigger battery, faster charging time, Wifi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Haptics are better too and so is the sound. The trackpad is way more accurate. Look just go into YouTube and look it up. Many YouTubers have their hands on one and are reviewing it.
