Just bought my Deck this year and with Valve not offering any sort of trade-in program or self-upgrade kits at the moment, I figure a lot of owners are also asking themselves the same thing. I know that the Steam Deck 2 will eventually come at some point and my current one works perfectly fine, but the OLED screen, wifi chip, and better battery are REALLY enticing to me. Battery life especially because that is one of my biggest hangups with the first generation models.

Anyone else on the fence too?

It looks like you’ve got it pretty figured out on your own, but since you’re asking Reddit - I say sell your OG and buy 10 OLEDs. Maybe 20!

no, it is perfectly okay to sell your current and buy oled.

    1. there is a person who will buy your lcd deck and will love it, so one more in the community

    2. you will get noticeably better steamdeck. I’m doing the same thing.

maybe I leave my current deck for my son when he travels, but not sure he will like it, so might end up selling

now, I know my statement in 2) is not popular around here, but just check digital foundry, dave2d, taki udon’s reviews, cryobyte’s vid and gamers nexus teardown comparison and it simply is a fact oled version is a better console. no shame in admitting that. I love my lcd steamdeck, it’s the best gadget I ever owned (and I owned one too many tbh). but I’m getting oled right away as it is my dream come true

I see no reason to upgrade to the OLED. It’s only worth it if you’re a new buyer buying your first Deck or are within the return window. The updates are minimal at best and the original Deck works beautifully. Especially with the upcoming OS update, which ironically the same people shitting on the system this week were on here praising last week.

OLED on its own is a massive update, especially if you play handheld only. Add 90hz and HDR and we’ve got ourselves some beautiful eye candy to look forward to! That said if the OLED is not an incentive for you, there’s no real reason to upgrade.

It’s really up to you. Yes it’s a lot of money for a small upgrade, but if you have the cash in hand just go for it.

Personally I might upgrade because I use my Steam Deck a lot, so I know I’ll be using the OLED one as well making my investment worthwhile.

Where I’m very careful is with new gadgets that might end up in a drawer after a month.

No. Why is that enticing? The LCD screen actually looks great. WiFi chip is needed for what exactly…? And slightly better battery really isn’t going to mean anything in the grand scheme of things when you’d be better off just getting a nice power bank.

I’ve had my deck since August of last year and it’s still amazing. Trying to sell your deck is gonna be a pain atm since the market is going to be saturated with others doing the same. Saw the same shit happen when the Ally came out. Are the slight upgrades really worth that much to you?

Casual gamer here. As a 1st gen 512 GB owner since summer this year, I decided against the upgrade at least for now. It would be a hassle to get a good deal for the 1st gen Deck. Plus, it’s a nice opportunity to practice self-control. We own these devices and they don’t own us. I’ve always cringed at people running and getting all panicky to get latest the smartphone and I don’t wanna to do the same thing now.

My reasons are all very subjective as you can see, but I don’t feel I own the Deck long enough to suddenly decide it has enough flaws to justify getting the OLED right away.

I also understand people who are upgrading. Especially if you have the convenience of gifting/selling the old Deck to a family member or something. Under those circumstances I would upgrade too!

They don’t offer a trade in program because they don’t sell used decks and you don’t need one.

You really got to ask yourself whether or not the “upgrades” are worth $200 - $300 for you.

Since Valve offers refurbished 512 GB models for €379, that’s the maximum street price you would achieve for your used Deck. Unless of course you find someone really ignorant and/or stupid.

A new OLED 512 would be €569 here in my country, so almost €200 difference. A 1TB OLED would be €679 here. That’s a €300 fee for the upgrades. I mean…one could also throw in an additional €79 and get TWO refurbished LCD 512GB decks…

The market is now being flooded with used decks. Good luck getting anywhere near what it’s worth to put toward the oled model.
