I had been waiting for Assassins Creed sales, so I bought Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla during this sale. I also grabbed Dragon’s Dogma, Halo MCC, Detroit: Become Human, and The Game of LIFE 2 (for cross play with my wife). Many of the games on my wishlist were not on big enough of a discount for me yet. I’m patient, and have plenty to play now.
Sometimes I think some of you don’t even play games on the Deck.
I was a Switch player for years, love handheld gaming. I like to have a movie or something on the tv in the background instead. After 2 years of religiously playing Animal Crossing New Horizons I sort of just ran out of things to do. No game really captured me. When Hogwarts Legacy was coming out I was super hyped for it, but just didn’t want to play it on Switch so I bought a Steam Deck just for the game. I really enjoyed the game, but more than that I finally was excited about gaming again. The Deck really opened me up to a ton of games I couldn’t play handheld before. Always seem to have something to play these days.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is my favorite gaming experience on the Deck so far.

Yes, I didn’t change much and it runes really well. I tend to always drop settings on shadows, depth, fog, etc just to boost performance because those things don’t matter to me as much as avoiding stutters. The fan does run the whole time, there may be even more you could optimize.

I cross play Fall Guys with my wife who plays on Switch, but Fall Guys is delisted from Steam so you have to buy a key for the game online and activate it in your Steam wallet. Wish this method worked for Fortnite, but nope. Fall Guys does work great though.
You can play with your preferred input on a Steam Deck. Hook up a mouse and keyboard if that’s what you’re used to, or if you have a preferred controller, connect that.
I wouldn’t necessarily consider FPS a performance metric, it’s more of a cosmetic preference. The point does stand however that other performance metrics improved across the board with each update.
I think I locked it to 30 so I could raise other settings instead, FPS never mattered to me especially on a handheld.
It felt like a new system to me on launch. I feel like not only is it richer without looking over saturated and blown out like VibrantDEck does, but somehow it also seems sharper? Almost more detailed? It’s shocking to me that this could be achieved with a software update and not a hardware upgrade.
I see no reason to upgrade to the OLED. It’s only worth it if you’re a new buyer buying your first Deck or are within the return window. The updates are minimal at best and the original Deck works beautifully. Especially with the upcoming OS update, which ironically the same people shitting on the system this week were on here praising last week.
Free $600 then? K. Cool. 👀
